Carter and Myers Not Enough to Stop #15 Dodge City
Liberal, Kansas – Seward County vs. Dodge City has always been one of the top rivalries for the Lady Saints in the Jayhawk and it once again proved to be a great game as SCCC took on the #15 Conqs an hour and a half down the road at DC3 where a back-and-forth battle through most of the afternoon resulted in the Conqs taking a 74-63 win over Seward County.
The Lady Saints came out on fire after the tip-off with Jamia Carter splashing in a corner three to help Seward County start the game off on a 7-0 run in the first two minutes. Alianna Colon kept the hot streak going with a timely three from the top of the arc to push the Lady Saints lead to eight but a 15-6 run over the last five minutes of the first quarter resulted in a one-point lead for the nationally ranked Conqs 17-16.
Colon started the second quarter for Seward County with another big time three-pointer to keep the score close 21-19 against Dodge City with Ari Gordon slashing her way down the lane for a floater keep the scoring alive for the green and white. A steal and score from Carter found an open Xoe Rosalez in the corner to cut the deficit down to three before knocking in another one to end the half with the Lady Saints behind 34-29 against the #15 ranked team in the NJCAA.
Allie Myers opened the second half with a quick four points off a steal and score and an offensive putback to close the gap back to one, but the Conqs responded with a run of their own to take a seven-point lead 40-33. Back-to-back offensive rebound putbacks from Myers and Gordon let the Lady Saints claw within two 40-38 entering the media timeout but a 14-4 run by Dodge City put SCCC behind by double figures 54-42.
The fourth quarter saw Carter light up the scoreboard for Seward County as she made her way to the basket to keep the difference at ten with a point-blank layup that she later followed with another couple of scores at the rim. A steal and score by the Lady Saints leading scorer brought the score back to within eight but Seward County was unable to get any closer as the Conqs finished with a 74-63 win over the Lady Saints
Carter finished the game with a team high of 16 points while Myers and Colon each contributed 11 points with Myers also hauling in 16 rebounds for another double-double.
Seward County now falls to a 14-12 record on the 2023-24 season with a .500 record in conference action of 10-10 in the Jayhawk. The Lady Saints will now return home for a Saturday matchup inside the Green House with the undefeated Blue Dragons of #1 Hutchinson.
