
Season ends for Lady Saints after loss at Coffeyville
COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – The Seward County Community College women's basketball team had its season end with a 61-50 loss at Coffeyville Community College on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Region VI tournament.
The Lady Saints finished 20-12 overall and 14-11 in the Jayhawk Conference. It was the first time Seward reached the 20-win mark since the 2021-22 season.
The game was built on a series of runs. The teams played even through the first quarter with Seward trailing 8-6 at the 4:15 mark, but Coffeyville scored the next seven points to take a 15-6 lead after one.
The Red Ravens opened up a 10-point advantage at 18-8, but the Lady Saints came storming back on a 15-2 outburst and grabbed a 23-20 margin with 3:35 remaining. Coffeyville weathered the storm and ended the half with an 8-0 run to take a 28-23 lead.
After the third quarter, Seward was outscored by Coffeyville, 16-12 and trailed 44-35 lead heading into final stanza.
The Lady Saints were not done and whittled down the margin to six, 56-50, with over two minutes remaining. Seward missed a few opportunities to get closer and Coffeyville iced the game with free throws.
Allie Myers had 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals, Ari Gordon chipped in with 10 points and Chloe Burnham scored nine points for Seward, which was only 30 percent from the field, 18-of-60. The Lady Saints were strong from the free-throw line on 12-15 shooting (80 percent).
The game leaders for Coffeyville included Karys Washinton, who led the Red Ravens with a season-high 24 points and 14 rebounds, and sophomore guard Norika Welch, who scored 13 points.
Coffeyville improved to 25-5 on the season and advanced to play Hutchinson in the semifinals of the Region VI playoffs at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Hays.
