Lady Saints Bulldoze Past Western Texas
Liberal, Kansas – Seward County has had a strong start to their 2024-25 season after a perfect start on opening weekend that was followed up Tuesday afternoon with a dominant win over West Texas with the Lady Saints taking down the Westerners 77-46 inside of the Green House for their home opener.
SCCC opened the contest with guns blazing from long-range as Maddie Kincaide, Kylee Hunt, and Avery Marchino all nailed in a triple to push Seward County ahead 13-0 and force an early timeout from the Westerners. It was raining inside the Green House for the Lady Saints with every shot seeming to go in with an off balanced floater from Chloe Burnham finding its way in to make it a 23-5 lead before a pair at the stripe from Marchino helped end the first ten minutes with Seward County fully in control with a 25-8 lead.
West Texas opened the second with an 8-0 run of their own to close the gap on the Lady Saints until a pair of fast break layups from Marchino and Hunt helped to charge back ahead with a 33-16 lead. Kincaide helped keep the scoring alive for SCCC in the final two minutes of the half while Allie Myers used her long reach to intercept a pass and take it to the basket for two before Kezia Grant-Bobb wrapped up the quarter with an offensive rebound that turned into a turnaround jumper for two to make it 44-24 Seward County entering the halftime break.
Grant-Bobb's scoring carried over into the second half with a pair of scores in the paint to keep the Lady Saints' lead at twenty while a fastbreak score from Hunt off another Myers steal put SCCC over the fifty-point mark for a 50-35 lead. Destiny Alexander entered into the matchup and hauled in rebound after rebound with a big offensive board that quickly led to two points followed by a cashed in three from Hunt to make it 57-35 with three minutes left in the third. Burnham pushed the tempo throughout the final minutes of the quarter to keep momentum in favor of Seward County with a pull up jumper from the free throw stripe to send the Lady Saints into the fourth with a 62-35 lead over the Westerners.
The final quarter of the afternoon continued the high level scoring they had throughout the contest with Burnham draining a three from the wing with Marchino nailing another mid-range jumper to make it 7-43 SCCC. A parade at the free throw stripe from the Lady Saints helped stretch their lead out even further as RaMya Kennedy was fouled on a three and nailed all three from the stripe to begin what ended as seven straight made free throws to end the game 77-46 for a home opener win inside of the Green House.
Hunt led all scorers with 18 points to go with 8 rebounds and 6 steals while Grant-Bobb and Marchino each scored 13 points with 5 rebounds. Myers who usually is on double-double watch was on triple-double watch against West Texas as the sophomore forward finished the night with 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists to also go with 5 steals and 2 blocks.
Seward County remains perfect to start the year with a 3-0 record in non-conference action and will be continuing their non-conference schedule on Thursday as they face the Otero Rattlers for the second time in two weeks in a 6:00 PM matchup.
