Lady Saints ice cold in the third, fall at Lady Conqs, 66-48

DODGE CITY, Kan. – Poor shooting in the second half, particularly in the third quarter, doomed the Seward County Community College women's basketball team to a 66-48 road loss at fifth-ranked Dodge City Lady Conquistadors on Saturday.

The Lady Saints, who had their winning streak snapped at four games, dropped to 3-2 in the Jayhawk Conference and 8-3 overall. Seward hosts Barton Community College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Greenhouse. The gameday sponsor is Bank of Beaver City.

It was a back-and-forth battle in the first half with neither team gaining a significant advantage. Dodge City did open a seven-point lead after the first quarter at 23-16, but Seward started the second quarter with a pair of three-pointers by Maddy Kincaide and the Lady Saints were only down by one at 23-22.

The teams played tight throughout the rest of the quarter and the Lady Conquistadors held a 35-32 advantage at the half. The Lady Saints shot 11-of-26 from the field in the first two quarters.

Things went south in the third quarter for Seward as Dodge City went on a 7-0 run to hold a 10-point margin at 42-32 with 6:32 remaining. The lead for Dodge City ballooned to 15 after three quarters at 53-38 and the Lady Conquistadors never looked back.

The Lady Saints were held to just six points in the third and only 13 percent from the field on 2-of-15 shooting. They finished 6-of-36 from the field for the second half.

Allie Myers had a double-double for Seward with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Kylee Hunt had 11 points and five rebounds while Kezia Grant-Bobb added eight points and six rebounds for the Lady Saints.

Tayah Morgan had 16 points, Layla-J Cameron scored 13 points and Shorna Preston chipped in with 11 points for Dodge City, which extended its winning streak to nine games. The Lady Conquistadors remained unbeaten in conference play at 6-0 and improved to 11-1 overall.
