Seward County Clips Red Ravens’ Wings in Big Conference Win

Liberal, Kansas – After taking a week off since their last game, the Seward County Lady Saints basketball team took to the court inside of the Green House where it was a battle between the fifth and sixth seeds in the KJCCC standings as SCCC clipped the wings of the Coffeyville Red Ravens in a 62-44 win for the Lady Saints.

Seward County started strong and never looked back as they held the lead for all 40:00 minutes after Alianna Colon connected from long range for three to give the Lady Saints an early 5-0 lead. Back-to-back fast break scores down the lane through traffic for Jamia Carter pushed the lead to nine over the Red Ravens midway through the first and a knock down three by Naomi Aragonez grew their advantage to double digits 19-8 to end the first quarter.

High level scoring continued for Seward County to start the second as Aragonez hit another two triples in the opening minutes to put the Lady Saints far ahead 27-8 while a three by fellow sophomore Colon put SCCC over the thirty points mark with a 30-10 lead. Carter joined in on the fun from beyond the three-point line with a corner three of her own to put all the momentum in favor of Seward County entering the halftime break 37-23 over Coffeyville.

Xoe Rosalez opened the second half with five quick points off an easy layup at the basket and a big time three pointer to put the score at 42-25 just one minute into the third quarter. Another two long range bombs by Colon pushed the Lady Saints' lead back to twenty 50-30 before a five-minute cold spell by both teams ended the quarter with the Red Ravens scoring a late basket to enter the final quarter with SCCC up 50-32.

Seward County put their foot on the gas and kept revving the engine as Ari Gordon forced a turnover for the Red Ravens and capitalized with an easy two points that Allie Myers quickly followed with a strong post move score to keep the lead strong 55-37. A mid-range jumper from Sanaa Dennis kept the advantage growing for the Lady Saints and a last minute three from Biyyanah Ellis off the bench sealed the win 62-44 for Seward County.

Carter led all scorers with 18 points in the KJCCC matchup while Colon and Aragonez each added on 12 thanks to their sharpshooting from long range. Myers once again grabbed every rebound she could find with a team high of 16 while also snatching away 4 steals.

The Lady Saints now improve to a 14-9 overall record on the 2023-24 season with a conference record of 10-7 that puts them half a game behind the fifth seed in the Jayhawk standings. Seward County will head back on the road this upcoming Wednesday to continue their hot streak in Great Bend when they face the Cougars of Barton.
