Lady Saints pummel Trinidad with a pair of run-rule wins, 13-4 and 35-17

TRINIDAD, Colo. – After postponements and schedule changes, the Seward County Community College softball team finally got on the field and took out its frustration on Trinidad State College with a pair of five-inning, run-rule wins, 13-4 in the opener and 35-17 in the second game, for the non-conference, doubleheader sweep.

The Lady Saints snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 9-15 overall. Seward returns to Jayhawk Conference play on Saturday, hosting Garden City at 1 and 3 p.m. at French Family Field. SCCC is 3-7 in the conference.

GAME ONE

Seward scored 13 runs in the first two innings and cruised to the easy victory.

The Lady Saints opened a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Alyssa Morgan had an RBI and Hailey Michalik and Emily Lane followed by each driving in two runs.

Trinidad State scratched back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but Seward came with eight runs in the top of the second to put the game away. Anberlin Tatum, Kynleigh Kirby, Taryn Golden and Brooklynn Castagnetta each had two RBI in the inning and the Lady Saints had a 13-2 advantage.

The Trojans added two runs in the third to cap the rest of the scoring.

Kirby pitched two innings and gave up two runs and Lynnette Hernandez tossed three innings and gave two runs.

GAME TWO

The Lady Saints sent 22 batters to the plate and scored 18 runs in the top of the first inning, which took over an hour to play. The inning consisted of eight hits, five errors, five walks and a hit batter to account for the scoring.

The 18-run inning was the difference maker because over the next 4 1/2 innings, the teams would each score 17 runs.

Brooklynn Castagnetta powered Seward by driving 10 runs, including a grand slam. Jahlisa Klear went 3-for-5 with four RBI and scored six runs and Clarissa DelLaFuente chipped in with three hits, two RBI and scored four times for the Lady Saints, who had four players each with two RBI.
