Shooting Slump Results in Loss on the Road for Lady Saints

Liberal, Kansas – The Seward County Lady Saints women's basketball team made a business trip out east towards the #23 nationally ranked Coffeyville Red Ravens where despite a low scoring first couple of minutes to start the game, Coffeyville was able to find their rhythm while the Lady Saints could never recover, shooting 13.8% from the field in a 57-37 loss.

Both baskets seemed to have lids put over them at the start of the contest with neither team able to find ways to score effectively in the first couple of minutes with Seward County trailing the Red Ravens 9-4 heading into the first media timeout of the afternoon. Mid-way through the first quarter of action the lid finally lifted for Coffeyville who went on a 13-0 run to take a 17-4 advantage over the Lady Saints before finishing the first ten minutes of action with SCCC down 19-5.

The scoring slump continued into the second with Seward County only able to score on three made free throws to start the quarter while the Red Ravens once again stretched their lead further to 25-8 before Kayla Peoples was finally able to score five straight points for the Lady Saints off a driving floater and a corner three to cut the deficit down to 27-13. Xoe Rosalez used her quickness to slash to the rim for an easy two points while Allie Myers cashed in a pair from the charity stripe to close the gap to twelve with Coffeyville ahead 29-17 going into the halftime break.

It was back-and-forth to open the second half with the Lady Saints and Red Ravens both exchanging baskets with Naomi Aragonez cashing in a three-pointer from the right wing, keeping the score within fifteen at 37-22 before Coffeyville once again managed to create a run and stretch their lead to 41-24 and force SCCC to call timeout. Offensively, Seward County just could not find the bottom of the basket in the final minutes of the third quarter to go into the final ten minutes down 43-24.

After starting her first game of the season, Ari Gordon helped create some scoring opportunities for the Lady Saints in the fourth with a drive down the baseline for an easy two points and bring the score to 49-29 before Kya Richardson knocked down a corner three moments after coming off of the bench for SCCC. Despite finding more ways to score in the final quarter, the Lady Saints fell to the nationally ranked Red Ravens in a 57-37 loss in Jayhawk Conference action.

Seward County now falls to 5-3 overall on the 2023-24 season with a 2-3 record in KJCCC action. They will return home to Liberal to prepare for a weekend matchup against the Barton Cougars this Saturday inside of the Green House with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 PM.
