Weather Results in Early Finish After Saints Take Game One

Liberal, Kansas – Thursday afternoon started another Jayhawk Conference series for the Seward County baseball team as they made the trip out west to take on the Colby Trojans where after a late run in game one to take a 1-0 series lead, both sides had to find cover as the weather forced them to end the game early three innings in.

It took a few innings before either side could get on the board, but the Saints were the first team to round the bases as Kotaro Wakui stepped up and hit an RBI single out to right field to bring the reigning KJCCC West Player of the Week Nathan Hopkins home for a 1-0 lead. A couple innings later in the fifth the Trojans managed to score their first run of the day to lock it up at 1-1 but a four-run inning in the sixth propelled Seward County back in front.

SCCC took advantage of the pitching from Colby as they walked in another score to regain the lead while Keagon Pitton stepped up to the plate and slammed out a double to drive in a pair of runs for a 4-1 lead. Connor Raney kept the scoring alive with a ground ball RBI single out to center field to bring home Pitton to make the lead 5-1 Seward County where the advantage would stay as Tyler Wilcox helped retire the Trojans to win the first game of the series.

Three innings into game two the Saints and Trojans needed to find cover quickly as the weather worsened due to lightning and rain that caused the game to end early with a makeup time and date still TBD as of now.

Seward County will now return home to Liberal with one more win on their record at 26-22 now on the 2024 season while going 14-11 in KJCCC action. The Saints will now face the Trojans on Brent Gould Field this Saturday for at least two more games with the option to resume game two on Saturday being on the board as well.
