Saints Finish Series Sweep Thanks to Castro’s Big Day

Liberal, Kansas – After a strong hitting game one the previous day, the Seward County baseball team took the field against Trinidad State for their final two games of the series where the Saints held strong in game one to grab a 3-2 win while some big hits at the plate from Sergio Castro propelled them to a series sweep with an 11-2 win over the Trojans.

Trinidad scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer on a fly ball to center to take a 2-0 lead before both sides went into a pitching battle over the next four innings with neither side rounding the bases. Trenton Rowan matched the Trojans with a home run bomb of his own out to center that scored two runs for the Saints while a double from Todd Baffa in the seventh drove in Connor Raney to take the lead 3-2 before finishing off Trinidad State in game one to improve to 2-0 in the series.

Trent Gerber stepped on the mound in game two of the day and held the Trojans at bay for the first two innings with three strikeouts to keep them scoreless before they finally scored their first run in the third to take a 1-0 lead over Seward County. A double from Cameron Cartwright in the fourth tied it up at 1-1 while a double from Brock Sundlie in the next inning started a scoring run for the Saints as Baffa added on a double of his own to put SCCC in front 4-1. A home run bomb by Castro added another two scores to their total while another two runs in the seventh brought their lead up to 8-1 entering the eighth. A final run for the Trojans put the score at 9-2 before another big swing from Castro led to another home run out to left field that sealed the win 11-2 and complete the three-game series sweep for the Saints.

Seward County now sits with a winning record following nonconference action with a 12-11 record so far in the 2024 season. The Saints will now begin conference action as they play host to Dodge City on Thursday for two of four games in the series that opens up Jayhawk play.
