16 Seward Student-Athletes Honored in Record NJCAA Academic Award Class

If classroom performance is any judge of it, there are going to be a record number of former NJCAA student-athletes making their mark on the working world in two years as the NJCAA announced on Wednesday that a record 2,026 athletes, including 16 Seward County Saints and Lady Saints from six different teams have earned NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards, formerly known as the NJCAA’s Academic All-American award.

Seward Volleyball to Hold Individual Summer Camps

The Seward County Lady Saints Volleyball team has announced the dates and times for their 2015 Individual Skills Camps. Players entering 6th through 8th grade are invited to attend the first session of the day on June 22nd, 23rd, and 24th from 8:00-10:00 AM. Players entering high school in 2015 are invited to attend the second session from 10:30-12:30 PM. Players will learn all around skills to improve their game and will receive specialized training in their positions as well. The cost for the camp is $60 which includes 6 hours of training, plus a free camp t-shirt.

A pair of Seward County Lady Saints signed on the dotted line to continue their playing careers at four year schools on Wednesday’s NCAA National Signing Day as Carolina Gasparini will be headed to the University of Arkansas-Monticello and Thayna Silva is on her way to Bismarck, North Dakota to play at the University of Mary.

Before last week, Seward County freshman Angelina Minor’s career high in kills was 9 and she was struggling to find her way into the lineup on a Lady Saints team loaded with hitters at her position. Fast forward seven days in a week in which she recorded her two best performances of her collegiate career with 22 and 19 kills, she was named the NJCAA National Player of the Week on Wednesday in a national release.

Nine Seward County Lady Saint sophomores playing in their final career match in the friendly confines of the Greenhouse, made history and kept history going Thursday night in Liberal as they defeated Cloud County 3-1 to secure 3rd place for the upcoming NJCAA Region VI Tournament. Seward continues a streak of 30 straight wins against the T-Birds dating back to 1998 and in the 4th set Thursday night, set a school record with a 37-35 win over Cloud, the longest single set in school history.

For some reason, the Butler Grizzlies have had their struggles against everyone else in the Jayhawk Conference this season except for the Seward County Lady Saints. The 10-19, 3-10 Grizzlies defeated Seward earlier this season in the Greenhouse and Wednesday night in the Power Plant in El Dorado had a 2-1 lead on the Lady Saints before the gals in green stormed back to win the fourth and then the fifth sets to win a 3-2 decision to improve to 22-13, 9-5 on the year.
