Seward basketball preview at Colby

LIBERAL – The Lady Saints and the Saints basketball teams resume their seasons with a trip to Colby on Monday. The games were postponed from Saturday until today due to the inclement weather this past weekend. The Lady Saints will be playing at 2 p.m. with the Saints to follow at approximately 4 p.m.

The next home game at the Greenhouse is Wednesday, January 8 vs. Independence. Lady Saints play at 5:30 p.m. and Saints play at 7:30 p.m. The gameday sponsor is 101.5 La Mexicana and 93.9 La Fiesta.

 

LADY SAINTS (5-2, 10-3) at TROJANS (4-4, 9-4)

The Lady Saints look to continue their hot play from the first half of their season. Seward is 5-2 in the Jayhawk Conference, fourth in the standings, and 10-3 overall, having won six of their last seven games.

Seward last played on December 14 with a 100-27 rout over Fort Hays Tech – Northwest.

Kylie Hunt, Ari Gordon and Allie Myers lead the Lady Saints. Hunt is averaging 13.7 points and 4.8 rebounds, Gordon is averaging 9.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals and Myers is averaging 7.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.0 steals. Avery Marchino is averaging 8.9 points.

The Trojans are 4-4 in conference play, eighth in the standings, and 9-4 overall.

Seward and Colby split its series last season with each team winning at home. The Lady Saints won at the Greenhouse, 67-60, on January 13 while the Trojans picked up an overtime victory, 73-67, at home on February 28.

Colby has won three of its last four games, including a 56-44 victory at Pratt on December 14.

Ishante Suttington (12 ppg.), Jera Kruleski (11.8 ppg.) and Sofia Lopez (9.4 ppg.) pace the Trojan attack.

SAINTS (1-6, 2-10) AT TROJANS (3-5, 8-6)

The Saints look for a fresh start after going through a tough first half. Seward played competitively, but could not finish out in the win column, which includes three overtime losses.

Seward is 1-6 in the Jayhawk, 12th in the conference and 2-10 overall.

SCCC is coming off an 82-79 loss to Fort Hays Tech – Northwest at the Greenhouse on December 14.

Dekwon Brown, Muhammed Jobe and Benni Kazadi power the SCCC attack. Brown is averaging 15 points, Jobe is averaging 10.6 points and Kazadi is averaging 9.1 points.

Colby is tied for seventh in the Jayhawk at 3-5 and 8-6 overall.

The Trojans are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, falling at Pratt, 89-88, on December 14.

Eternity Eguagie leads Colby in scoring, averaging 17.9 points, while Maxence Massadila chips in with 9.9 points and Gaius Meowuru M'Ella adds 9.2 points.

The teams split the series last year with each winning at home. Seward won at the Greenhouse, 73-61, on January 13 while Colby scored its home victory, 80-75, on February 28.
