Lady Saints Win Battle of Top 25 Teams to Remain Perfect

Lady Saints Win Battle of Top 25 Teams to Remain Perfect

The Seward County Lady Saints faced one of their toughest early season tests Saturday at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson as they took on #23 State Fair in a matinee affair.  If it was a test, the Lady Saints aced it, hammering the Roadrunners 74-58 in a game that they led by double digits for the final 31:13.

The Lady Saints got off to a hot start and didn't let up Saturday afternoon in the Sports Arena, jumping out to a quick 10-2 lead and stretching that advantage to 19-5 before 5:00 had gone off the clock since the opening tip.  Seward continued to lead comfortably, holding a 28-14 cushion to the first half media timeout.  Back to back buckets on the inside by Axelle Bernard and Tamara Seda pushed the Lady Saints lead to 36-19 with 5:41 left in the first and Seward took a commanding 43-28 lead into the break at half.  The Lady Saints shot 55% in the first half, turning 15 State Fair turnovers into 14 points.

The Lady Saints didn't waste any time bolstering their lead as the second half began, scoring the first six points on finishes from three different players to take their largest lead of the game at 49-28.  The Roadrunners cut Seward's lead to 14 at the 13:00 mark but the Lady Saints scored the next six to once again make it a 20 point game with 11:27 remaining in the contest.  It remained a 20 point Seward County advantage with 6:35 to go when State Fair made one last ditch effort to get back into the game.  The 'Runners went on a 9-0 run, holding the Lady Saints without a single point for 4:31, but they only managed to get to within 11 as a Seda layup broke the State Fair run and got Seward back on track.  The Lady Saints finished the game by scoring 8 of the final 10 points and went on to down #23 State Fair 74-58.

Seward finished the afternoon shooting 48% overall from the field while holding State Fair to just 32% in the game.  The Lady Saints also forced 27 Roadrunner turnovers, scoring 25 points off of those giveaways in the victory.  Seda had another monster game for the Lady Saints, scoring 16 points and pulling down 16 rebounds.  Brianna Scott led Seward with 18 points and also 7 assists in the win while Kyndal Davis had 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists for the gals in green.

The Lady Saints record remains unblemished at 7-0 with the victory while State Fair drops its second straight to fall to 8-2 on the year.

Next up for Seward is a trip to the Perryman Center in Garden City this weekend where they will take on Trinidad State and New Mexico JC in the early games of the Pepsi Classic Friday and Saturday.
