Saints Esports Weekly Recap

Liberal, KS – Strategy, Communication, Coordination.

A familiar college returned to compete Tuesday night against the Saints Super Smash Brothers team. Iowa Central Community College faced off against Michael Medina in a best of 5 set. Michael won last week against another member of the ICCC team but couldn't repeat again this week. Marcos Montoya faired better but still found himself in a knockdown, drag out match against Dallas College Brookhaven. Montoya and his opponent went the distance in all 5 matchups. Montoya eventually got the upper hand with his signature Jigglypuff and won on the night with a score of 3 – 2. His record improves to 4 – 3 on the season. Luis Ortiz had a much easier set against his foe from Heartland Community College. Ortiz lost the first match but came back with a vengeance to win 3 in a row against HCC. He won with a final score of 1 – 3. His record improves to 2 – 2 on the season. A rebroadcast of Ortiz's game can be found on the Youtube channel.

The Call of Duty 4v4 team got their first regular season win against a familiar foe from Iowa Central Community College late Tuesday evening. The Saints had played members of the ICCC team last week in the 2v2 Gunfights, only to see those challengers return in the full 4v4 mode. COD team member Dwayne Moran said, "we played against Holo and Lil Lupe during 2v2's last week and those guys were good. Seward County was a little worried when they saw them back this week but had their number all night." The Saints team showed communication, coordination, and patience that was way above previous sets during the season. They ended up beating ICCC with a score of 3 – 2.

The Madden team had tough battles on Wednesday during the regular season. Akele Powdrill had a back and forth slugfest against his foe from Dallas College Cedar Valley. The DCCV player won the first set in a tight matchup. Powdrill came back to win the second to tie the series. The last game of the night was a drag out to the finish with Powdrill unable to score in the final minutes of the game. Powdrill ended up falling on the night 1 – 2. Dwayne Moran had an even tougher time against the representative from South Carolina Sumter. Moran lost in a close matchup during the first set but couldn't overcome the opposition from USCS in the second. Moran lost on the night with a score of 0 – 2. Madden '24 playoffs start on November 29th.

The Saints Overwatch team took on Northwestern Michigan College Wednesday night. Julienne Salazar, Caden McCain, Blake Johnson, John Epp, and Vanessa Ramirez-Molina had a hard time facing down the team from NMC. The Saints were forced to play from behind all night as the coordination of character abilities from Northwestern proved to be too much for the green team. Several party wipes left a lot of time for NMC to complete the objectives during all three sets played. The Saints ended the night 0 – 3. Their record is currently 2 – 5.

It was Green vs Silver Thursday night for Call of Duty Gunfight. The Saints Green team, Dwayne Moran and Jesus Muniz, were matched up against the Saints Silver team, Landon Davis and Blake Johnson, in a 2v2 showdown. The Silver team came out quickly and won the first set, but Muniz and Moran fought back to win the second. After that, it was all Silver, winning the next two rounds 6 – 0 and 6 – 2. Davis and Johnson handed their fellow Saints a loss with a final match score of 3 – 1.

The Saint Rocket League team met up with Walters State Community College on the virtual pitch Friday night. The Saints came out to a hot start, leading the first game 3 – 0. Walters State started firing back with 3 minutes left to go and eventually tied the Saints. During sudden death overtime, Walters hit a lucky shot behind the defenders to win the game. The Saints were off balance for the rest of the night and weren't able to overcome the team from WSCC. They fell on the night with a score of 0 – 3. They'll join in the NJCAAE postseason starting December 1st for their shot at this semesters championship.

Week 7 was a repeat of week 5 as Marshalltown Community College returned to take on the Saints in Rainbow 6 Siege on Friday night. The Saints traded points back and forth with the Tigers for the first set, losing the round with a score of 7 – 5. In the second game, the Saints came out swinging early and started with a 3 – 0 lead. Marshalltown rallied back and went on to win 7 in a row, closing the game out with a score of 7 – 3. The Saints lost 0 – 2.

There is only one more week left in the regular season for Saints Esports. Matches will be played the week of November 13th through the 17th with postseason starting the week after Thanksgiving.

Matches are streamed Tuesday through Friday.
