Lady Saints Blast Past Mavericks to Sweep the Doubleheader

Liberal, Kansas – Seward County continued Jayhawk conference action on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against the Mavericks of NW Kansas Tech where the Lady Saints swept their KJCCC adversaries with a 6-0 score in game one and a run rule domination of 12-1 over the Mavs in game two to improve to 7-1 in conference play.

Seward County held NW Kansas tech scoreless in game one while finding ways to put themselves on the board starting with a double from Samantha Gomez to drive in Aaliyah Gutierrez for the first run of the day to go up 1-0. A fly out to center field for the green and white allowed another runner to make her way home this time being Raeana Ortiz to put SCCC up 2-0. Another two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Morgan and a ground out by Gomez added on a pair of scores that put the Lady Saints ahead even further at 4-0 before a big swing from Gutierrez in the fourth made it 5-0 over the Mavs. A final run for Seward County in the sixth off a double from Gutierrez put the Lady Saints ahead 6-0 where the score remained for SCCC to grab a win in game one.

Game two was two innings shorter thanks to the Lady Saints forcing the run rule over NW Kansas Tech as Kamryn Martinez struck out the first couple batters to keep the Mavs scoreless while Seward County scored quickly off a wild pitch that allowed Gutierrez to steal home. A ground ball combined with a NW Kansas Tech error allowed Martinez to make her way back to home to go up 2-0 after the first. An inside the park home run from Gutierrez resulted in three more runs for the Lady Saints total while three straight doubles from Morgan, Ortiz, and Jayah Tellez quickly put the game in run rule territory 9-0 after two innings. A triple in the third by Gomez kept the scores coming for Seward County while a bunt from Gutierrez drove in Corlyn McGaha for a 12-0 lead entering the top of the fifth where one run from the Mavs finally put them on the board before SCCC wrapped up game two 12-1 to sweep the doubleheader.

Seward County now improves to 11-9 overall on the 2024 season and remains towards the top of the KJCCC standings with a 7-1 record in Jayhawk conference action. Conference action continues for the Lady Saints as they make their way towards Pratt for a doubleheader on Wednesday with game one beginning at 2:00 PM.
