Lady Saints Swept by Colby Due to Costly Errors

Liberal, Kansas – After seeing their win streak snapped on the road this past weekend, the Seward County Lady Saints softball team brought those struggles back home as they fell in a sweep to the Colby Trojans to start the final week of the regular season with nine errors between the two games against their Jayhawk rival.

Seward County started the day strong with Alyssa Morgan hitting out a fly ball to right field that drove in Zoe Lampe to give the Lady Saints a 1-0 lead before a 2 RBI single put the Trojans ahead 2-1 in the top of the third. A costly error from the green and white resulted in another two scores for Colby in the fourth but luckily the Lady Saints capitalized on a Trojan error to close the gap before falling behind by four in the next inning 6-2 Colby. Another run by the Trojans in the top of the seventh put the Lady Saints in a big hole entering the bottom of the inning, but an RBI double from Alyssa Morgan helped get SCCC back on the board. Raeana Ortiz added on with a 2 RBI double of her own followed by an RBI triple from Kaylin Jones to trim the deficit down to one 7-6, but it was not enough as Colby struck out the final batter to hand the Lady Saints a 7-6 loss in game one.

Alyna Frazier helped put momentum in favor of Seward County with a big 2 RBI double out to center field to drive in Noemi Tudon and Anberlin O'Dell to score and take a 2-0 lead over the Trojans. Colby answered back quickly to tie the score back up in the second before grabbing a 5-2 lead in the third. Ortiz doubled out to left field in her second appearance at the plate in game two to drive in another run for SCCC to trim the gap while an absolute hammer from Hailey Michalik landed beyond the fences for a solo home run to make it 7-4 Trojans. Seward County stayed within reach up until the seventh inning where Colby scored six runs for a commanding 14-5 lead over the Lady Saints who could not recover. A final run in the bottom of the seventh from Samantha Gomez off a sacrifice fly by Jones made it 14-6 to end game two and give Colby a sweep over Seward County.

SCCC now falls to 24-18 overall on the 2024 season while sitting at 18-10 in the KJCCC standings which now puts them at fourth in the standings. The Lady Saints will have less than forty-eight hours to bounce back as they face their rivals in the Dodge City Conquistadors for sophomore day with the doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.
