Seward Steamrolls Floundering Conqs

A struggling 2-19 Dodge City team was no match for a fired up Seward County Lady Saints team Wednesday night in Dodge City as the two hooked up for Jayhawk West Conference action.  Seward opened the match with a 25-21 win and cruised to the sweep with 25-19 and 25-18 wins in the second and third sets to seal the deal.

Coming off of a three loss weekend, the Lady Saints had something to prove Wednesday night as they battled the last place team in the Jayhawk West Conference, the Dodge City Lady Conquistadors.  It was a poor start for Seward as Dodge took an early 5-2 and then 10-6 lead midway through the first set.  The Lady Saints came back to score four straight to tie the score and took their first lead at 13-12.  They continued to hold the Lady Conqs off, but weren't able to create much separation as they squeaked out the 25-21 win.

In the second the Lady Saints got off to a much better start, scoring five of the first six points of the set to take a 5-1 lead.  Dodge got back to within one at 6-5 before the Lady Saints reeled off four in a row to open up their largest lead of the night to that point at 10-5.  Seward continued to roll, ballooning their advantage to 16-6 before hanging on to win 25-19.

The third set was a tight one early on as Dodge jumped out to the 5-4 advantage to start things while it was Seward up 10-9 at the 19 point mark of the set.  The Lady Saints led 15-13 later on and pushed their lead to 20-14 late in the set.  Seward finished strong, opening the lead up to seven before putting Dodge City away 25-18.

Carolina Gasparini and Annelise Sanchez each finished with 9 kills for the Lady Saints on the outside.  Morgan Riley chipping in 8 kills on just 12 swings in the middle.  Nacole Miller finished with a match high 29 assists for Seward County and Gasparini, Kari Anderson, and Sanchez each reached double digits in digs with 12, 11, and 10 respectively.  As a team the Lady Saints finished with a .309 hitting percentage, just the third time they have hit above .300 as a team this season.

Seward improves to 11-10 overall and 4-1 in conference action while Dodge City's blues continue, falling to 2-19 and 0-7 on the year.

Next up for the gals in green is a much anticipated matchup with Jayhawk West rival Hutchinson Friday in the Sports Arena.  The Lady Saints and Lady Dragons are set for a 6:30 first serve with 2nd place in the West on the line.
