No. 18 Lady Saints defeat Northwest 69-44

GOODLAND, Kan.- No. 18 Seward County Community College defeats Northwest Kansas Technical College 69-44 and will face off against Hutchinson Community College on Saturday, for the Jayhawk West Conference title. The Lady Saints separated themselves in the third quarter by outscoring the Mavericks 18-9 and took a 50-34 lead in the final ten minutes.

The first quarter saw five lead changes and the Lady Saints trailed early 13-12. Seward looked to get themselves out of the shooting slump with their defensive intensity able to get deflections and steals for transition baskets late in the second quarter. With their length and size advantage over the Mavericks, the Lady Saints were able to regain the lead before halftime 32-25.

In the third quarter, the Lady Saints kept their intensity on the defensive side to expand their lead and get themselves into a comfortable position as they took control of the game. As the Lady Saints led 60-37 with less than five minutes to go both teams had an opportunity to play new rotations as the game was in Seward's favor.

The Lady Saints shot 50% from the field and outrebounded Northwest 42-21. The Mavericks are in the hunt for a postseason game as they sit at 8-20 on the season and 4-16 overall with a one-game advantage over Allen County with one game left.

Northwest was led by Zantasia White with 11 points and five rebounds. No other Maverick broke double digits in scoring.

Seward was led by Destiny Alston with 15 points and five rebounds. Vanda Cuamba added 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Saints travel to Hutchinson Community College on Saturday at 5:30 PM, for the Conference regular-season title game.
