Preview: Lady Saints Look to Avoid Upset In Concordia

LIBERAL, Kan. – The No. 8 Seward county women's basketball team will begin a two-game road stretch tomorrow (Nov. 18) when they travel to take on the Cloud County Thunderbirds at 6:00 p.m. in the Arley Bryant Gymnasium in Concordia.

Seward (4-0, 2-0) will look to continue their dominance over the Jayhawk Conference. Over the past two seasons, the Lady Saints have gone 27-1, and have won 14 straight regular season conference matchups.

The Lady Saints are coming off a 72-58 win over Butler, a game in which they never trailed. Mollie Mounsey led the all scorers with 21 points, while Vilma Covane joined her in the double-digits with 13. For the third consecutive game, the Lady Saints for over 20 turnovers, this time 26. 

Mounsey leads the Lady Saints in scoring on the season, averaging 16.8.  Fellow sophomore, Vanessa Caro, comes off the bench to add 10.3 a game, good for second on the team.  Although the Lady Saints force 28 turnovers a game, they also average 22 turnovers a game, something they'll look to correct in Saturday's matchup.

Cloud County (5-0, 2-0) is coming off an upset over No. 12 Hutchinson on Wednesday night, defeating the Blue Dragons 70-63.  Three T-Birds scored in the double-digits – Kelsi Mueller (24), Scout Frame (15), and Camille Awa Baud (15).  Cloud got to the charity stripe 18 times in the contest, making 17 of their tries.

On the season, Mueller (17.8 ppg), Frame (15.6 ppg), and Awa Baud (13.8 ppg) lead the T-Birds attack. Defending the rim will be Redshirt Freshman Keisha Hamilton, averaging 2.7 blocks per game.

Seward has won three in a row against Cloud County, with their last loss coming in 2016 in a 38-52 loss coming in Arley Bryant Gymnasium. The Lady Saints won all three matches a season ago, including a 72-54 win the the Region VI semi-final. Head Coach Toby Wynn holds a 16-9 career record against Cloud County.  Seward County leads the all-time series 34-12.
