2017-18 Seward County Women's Basketball Preview

LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County women's basketball team is coming off an impressive year, losing only three games and finishing 5th at the NJCAA National Tournament.  Head Coach Toby Wynn will look to continue his streak of 12 straight years with at least twenty wins.

"We have high expectations for the upcoming season," Coach Wynn said.  "We are working hard every day to try and compete for a Conference, Region, and National Championship. The new faces on this year's team are buying into the culture of our program and the returning sophomores have done a great job of leading our team through the preseason."

The Lady Saints return four players from their 5th place team – Brennyn Seagler, Valerie Caro, Vanessa Caro, and Mollie Mounsey.  Mounsey returns following an All-American season where she made 143 three-pointers, leading the nation in all levels.  Mounsey was the first freshman All-American for Seward County since 2007.

Seward County will have to rely heavily on freshman this year, with 12 of their 16 players being in their first year. Diana Gomez, Amy Scott, Kalen Green, Daelynn Lee, Lexi Hernandez, Melena Credle, Silvia Veloso, and Chelsea Lazenby will all battle for minutes at the guard position.  Sidney Tinner and Journey Greene join Seagler at the forward position, while Carla Covane and Vilma Covane are the two centers on the team.

For the most part, the Lady Saints consists of regionally acquired players.  Of the 16 players, six hail from Texas, four from Kansas, and one from Oklahoma.  Four players had to do some traveling, with Lee coming from New Mexico, Credle from Delaware, and Veloso, C. Covane, and V. Covane coming from Mozambique.

"We look forward to seeing all of our fans in the Green House this season," said Coach Wynn.

Seward County is ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA D-1 National Polls to begin the season.  The Lady Saints were predicted to finished 2nd in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference this season.  Hutchinson is the only team to be picked above Seward County.

The Lady Saints open their season against the Hesston College Larks on Saturday (Nov. 4) at 2 p.m.  The men's basketball team will have a game following the Lady Saints against the Northern Oklahoma-Enid Jets.  Sponsorship tickets will be available from Pepsi at Liberal Hutch's and Pizza Hut locations starting Thursday (Nov. 4).
