Lady Saints Win 10th Straight

Lady Saints Win 10th Straight

The #4 Seward County Lady Saints won their tenth straight game Wednesday night in the Colby Community Building, knocking off the Colby Lady Trojans by a count of 92-58 to improve to 27-1 on the year.

Seward got off to just the start they were looking to Wednesday, jumping out to a 12-2 advantage to begin the ballgame against the Trojans.  A steal and score from Mollie Mounsey stretched the lead to 21-6 late in the first and a late triple from the freshman made it a 20 point game at 29-9 after one.

Seward started the second quarter slow, playing even with Colby through the first five minutes of the period before turning things on in the final five of the half.  The Lady Saints eventually went on a 15-4 run to close the period, stretching their lead at the break to 50-22.

For the third straight game, the Lady Saints came out of the locker room at half sputtering.  Seward struggled to extend their lead through the first portion of the quarter and ended up getting outscored by the Trojans in the period to make it a 65-40 game at the end of three.

The Lady Saints picked things back up in the fourth, getting a three point play from Manuela Fungate to make it a 76-43 game and a sweet hookup from Diamond Bailey to Alex Tyson late in the game to push the Lady Saints to the 90 point mark.  Eventually Seward dribbled out a 92-58 win, giving them their tenth straight win since their only loss of the year to Hutchinson.

Seward shot 45% from the field in the win but uncharacteristically struggled from the free throw line and from beyond the arc, shooting just 50% and 31% respectively from those two lines.  Joanna Grymek dominated for Seward scoring 33 points and hauling in 16 rebounds against the undersized Colby front line.  Mounsey finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds for Seward while Fungate added 9 points and 12 rebounds off the Lady Saints bench.

The Lady Saints improve to 27-1 overall and 23-1 in Jayhawk Conference play with the victory while Colby falls to 3-25 overall and 1-23 in conference action.

Seward will continue their quest for a Jayhawk Conference Championship on Saturday in the Dodge City Student Activities Center when they take on a struggling Conqs squad in a 1:00 matinee in Dodge.
