Lady Saints Bench Leads Seward Past Colby in Blowout

Lady Saints Bench Leads Seward Past Colby in Blowout

With a busy three game schedule this week, Seward County Head Coach Toby Wynn was hoping to be able to rest his starters some Monday night as his Lady Saints took on the 4-22 Colby Lady Trojans.  However, even he didn't couldn't have known just how much he was going to be able to rest his starting five as no Lady Saint starter played more than 17:06 and all five rested for on the bench for the final 18:21 of the contest as Seward rolled the Trojans 81-39.

Seward dominated the game from the opening tip as they went inside to Joanna Grymek for buckets on their first two possessions and then went outside for a pair of threes from Erin Richardson and another from Daniela Galindo to get out to a 13-5 lead.  It was back to Grymek for the final 6:30 of the first quarter as she dumped in six more baskets to finish the period with 16 points as the Lady Saints got out to a 31-10 lead after one.  Seward shot 64% in the quarter and outrebounded Colby 14-4.

Scoring the first nine points of the second quarter, Seward quickly blew their lead up to 30 and it wasn't until the 4:18 mark of the quarter until Colby finally got their first two points of the period.  By the half, the Lady Saints extended their cushion to 50-16.  Seward shot 54% in the half, led by Grymek who put up 19 points and 9 rebounds in just 15 minutes of court time in the first half.  Colby managed just six field goals, shooting 19% in the half and was 2 for 17 from three point land.  The Lady Saints windexed the glass in the first half, holding a 34-10 advantage on the boards in the first 20 minutes of action.

Colby came out of the half to score four of the first six points in a stretch of 1:49 and at that point, Toby Wynn had seen enough of his starters, lifting all five to go to his bench for the duration of the game.  The Seward reserves responded as Samm Ashida came in and hit a pair of threes and Richardson scored on the break to make it a 60-22 game.  The Lady Saints continued to push, getting four points apiece from Shania Liggett and Alex Tyson to close out the third quarter, blowing the game wide open to 71-27 after three.

With the game well in hand, Seward put things on cruise control in the fourth.  Neidy Ocuane picked off a Colby pass and returned it the other way for two to give Seward their largest lead of the night at 79-30 midway through the fourth quarter and they would go on to win it 81-39 to pick up their 19th win on the year while sending Colby to their 19th straight loss.

The Seward defense was as impressive as its offense in the win, holding Colby to just 21% shooting on the night and limiting them to 13 field goals while forcing 14 Trojan turnovers.  The Seward bench outscored Colby's entire team 43-39 in the win, getting 12 points from Ashida, 8 from Richardson, and 6 each from Liggett, and Leslie Speer

The Lady Saints improve to 19-7 overall on the year with the win and pick up their 11th Jayhawk Conference victory, improving to 11-5 where they sit in 5th place with three games to go.  Colby remains winless in conference action at 0-17 while seeing their overall record backpedal to 4-24.

Seward continues a busy week on Wednesday as they make their shortest road trip of the season up the road to Garden City to take on the Jayhawk Conference leading Lady Busters in a 6:00 tip at the Perryman Center.
