Big Second Half Overcomes Slow Start For #7 Seward

Big Second Half Overcomes Slow Start For #7 Seward

It was a much better final 20 minutes than first 20 minutes to say the least for the Seward County Lady Saints Wednesday night in Colby.  After taking just a one point lead into the break against the struggling Lady Trojans, Seward found themselves down by one early in the second half before a 28-0 run blew the game open where they went on to win 74-43.

The Lady Saints actually got off to a smoking hot start, taking a 7-0 lead on Colby to start the game, but the Lady Trojans responded with an 11-0 run of their own to take the early lead on Seward.  Colby continued to lead as Seward remained ice cold shooting the basketball and after a pair of Lady Trojan three pointers, the Lady Saints found themselves in a six point hole 19-13 with 7:19 to go in the half.  A 14-0 Seward run over the next five minutes put the Lady Saints back in front 27-19, but a slow finish to the half by the Lady Saints saw their lead shrink from eight to just one as Colby cut it to a 30-29 game at the break.

Seward struggled on offense in the first half, shooting just 38% from the field while turning it over 12 times. Daniela Galindo and Kyndal Davis were the lone bright spots for Seward, combining for 20 of the Lady Saints 30 points in the period.

The Lady Saints remained cold to begin the second half and Colby took a 33-32 lead two minutes into the period.  From that point, a switch flipped for Seward and the Lady Saints went on a 28-0 run, holding Colby scoreless for over 8:30 to blow the game open with a 60-32 lead.  With 4:44 to go, Galindo nailed a high arching three and Davis scored on a runout to give Seward their largest lead to that point of the game at 65-35.  With the big advantage, the Lady Saints coasted to the finish line, winning going away 74-43 for win number 21 on the season.

Seward shook off a slow start to finish the game shooting 42% from the field while holding Colby to 27% shooting on the night and just 5 second half field goals. Galindo led the Lady Saints, tying a career high with 21 points while collecting a career best 10 rebounds in the victory.  Davis put together another nice night of her own with 18 points while Brooklyn Artis chipped in 12 for the Lady Saints.

Seward improves to 21-2 overall on the season and 9-1 in Jayhawk West Conference action where they sit in 2nd place, just one game behind Hutchinson at nights end.  Colby's struggles continue as they drop their seventh straight game, falling to 10-14 overall and 3-7 in conference action.

Next up for the Lady Saints is a return home to the Greenhouse Saturday night where they will host Pratt in a Jayhawk West contest beginning at 6:00.  Free tickets are available courtesy of our buyout sponsors Holiday Inn and Flooring America at both of their Liberal locations.
