#7 Lady Saints Hit 777's in Comeback Win Over #19 CSI in Vegas

One thing Seward County Head Coach Toby Wynn kept getting back to when talking about Sunday night's 61-59 come from behind win over #19 Southern Idaho was character.  Character the Lady Saints did show as they found their way back from 14 down in the second half to stun the Eagles in front of a spirited group of fans in Las Vegas to improve to 12-0 on the year.

Playing for the first time in three weeks, the Lady Saints looked like they hadn't missed a beat being apart from each other on their first possession as they pounded the ball inside to Tamara Seda for a quick bucket to take a 2-0 lead.  Two minutes later Southern Idaho got on the board with a three pointer to take their first lead of the game and the Golden Eagles went on a 12-0 run over the next 3:34 to extend their lead on Seward to 12-2. The Lady Saints didn't get their second field goal until Brooklyn Artis hit a three from the wing at the 13:28 mark and Southern Idaho continued to fluster Seward on the offensive end of the floor until taking a 31-21 lead into the halftime break.  The Lady Saints shot just 29% in the first 20 minutes of action and turned the ball over 10 times to fall behind by 10.

Seward came out much more spirited to start the second half and a quick 8-0 run to begin the period had them back to within two at 31-29.  However, the game of runs continued and this time it was Southern Idaho's turn as the Golden Eagles went on another 12-0 jaunt, much like the first half, to take their largest lead of the game at 43-29 with 14:35 remaining.  Just when it looked like the game might be getting away from the Lady Saints, a finish in the paint by Axelle Bernard and a pair of threes from Daniela Galindo had them back to within five at 46-41.  The Lady Saints continued to hang around, but still found themselves down by double digits at the under seven timeout in the second half.  Seward smothered Southern Idaho on the defensive end of the floor for the next three minutes, slicing into the Eagle lead and making it a 51-46 contest with 5:31 to go. The Lady Saints slowly drew closer and closer before a Bernard jumper made it a three point game and a pair of free throws by Kyndal Davis cut the CSI lead to just one at 55-54 with 2:37 left.  An Eagle free throw made it a two point game when Davis came up big again, drilling a three from the right wing to give the Lady Saints their first lead since the opening minutes of the contest at 57-56 with 1:49 remaining.  The Lady Saints defense kept the score there with under 1:00 to go when Artis drove to the basket, was fouled, and made both free throws to put them up by three.  With time now winding down on Southern Idaho, a desperation three heaved from the right wing banked home with 10 seconds left to tie the game up at 59 with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation.  Seward quickly pushed the ball up the floor after the make and with the clock just about to expire Artis was fouled again where she once again went to the line and made two freebies to put the Lady Saints up 61-59 with 2 seconds left.  Southern Idaho called a timeout to attempt another miracle, but this time there would be no such luck as Seward picked off their inbounds attempt to seal the game and give the Lady Saints a 61-59 win over the 19th ranked Golden Eagles.

Neither team shot the ball well in the crammed quarters of the Southern Nevada gym as Seward finished at just 36% which was just a tick better than CSI's 32% in the game.  Both teams struggled from three point land as Seward was 7 for 24 and Southern Idaho 7 for 25, but the difference was at the free throw line where the Lady Saints made 14 of 17, good for 82% while Southern Idaho was just 6 for 10.  Artis led the Lady Saints with 15 points in the win while Galindo came off the bench for 13 points and 6 rebounds.

#7 Seward County improves to 12-0 on the year while #19 Southern Idaho drops to 10-6.  The Lady Saints road won't get any easier on Monday in Las Vegas as they spin the wheel again and this time draw #11 Salt Lake to wrap up their annual holiday trip.  The Lady Saints and Lady Bruins will go head to head at 6:00 CST with an audio broadcast of the game available at kscbnews.net.
