Three Seward Teams Earn Top KJCCC GPA

The academic recognition continues for Seward County athletic teams, as the 2016-17 KJCCC academic report was released Monday (Aug. 7) with three SCCC teams earning the top cumulative GPA in their respective sports. Men and women’s tennis, along with women’s basketball, all earned the highest GPA in their sports.

After wrapping up a 43 win season on Sunday, seven Seward County Lady Saints were honored by the Jayhawk Conference on Wednesday as Monique Ashley, Kristyna Garcia, Jullian Atteberry, Sydney Epp, Maycee Koontz, Taylor Kathler, and AJ Cuellar were all named to the All-Jayhawk West team while Ashley was named the league’s Freshman of the Year.

The Seward County Lady Saints felt the highest of highs and the lowest of lows on Sunday afternoon at the Region VI Tournament in El Dorado, knocking off #1 and undefeated Butler 6-5 in the first of two title games, but falling to the Grizzlies in a 10-0 decision in game two to bring their season to a close at 43-22.

The Seward County Lady Saints picked up their 40th win of the season Friday afternoon in El Dorado at the Region VI Tournament, blanking Garden City 8-0 to advance to Saturday’s first semifinal round where they will take on the Barton Cougars at 1:00 at East Park.

The Seward County Lady Saints gave the defending National Champions and undefeated Butler Grizzlies a scare Monday afternoon at Lady Saints Field in Liberal, but Butler prevailed 2-0 in game one of their Jayhawk West doubleheader and dominated Seward 14-2 in game two to sweep the Lady Saints and send them to a 2nd place finish in the final conference standings.

With the newly crowned Saints Hall of Famer and former Lady Saint All-American Courtney Auger, Seward County was hoping for a jolt of energy Saturday afternoon at Lady Saints Field in Liberal as they resumed their April 14th game with Barton down 9-0. There would be no such luck as Seward failed to fight off the run rule as the Cougars took a 10-1 decision to drop the Lady Saints to 3rd place in the conference standings for the first time this season.

A continuing wet April has forced more schedule changes for Seward’s Spring sports this weekend. Saints Baseball has pushed their start time back to 3:30 on Saturday against Dodge City with the school’s annual Helicopter Ball Drop still planned for a 3:00 drop. Lady Saints Softball will resume their unfinished game with Barton at 4:00 at Lady Saints Field in Liberal while their postponed doubleheader Friday against Butler has been moved for the fourth time to Monday at 2:00.

The Seward County Lady Saints picked up two much needed Jayhawk West Conference wins Wednesday afternoon in Dodge City as Jordan Garrison banged two home runs in a 4-2 game one win for the Lady Saints and Sage Harrison went deep twice in the nightcap to help Seward to a 9-8 extra inning win to keep them in second place in the conference standings with two games to go.

The Seward County Lady Saints were forced to settle for a disappointing Jayhawk West Conference split on the road at rival Garden City Monday afternoon as they came from behind to take game one of the twinbill 6-3, but couldn’t hold an 8-3 lead in the 7th inning of game two, eventually going 11 innings where the Busters used a suicide squeeze to win 10-9 to salvage the split.
