The Lady Saints open the 2023 season 1-3 against NJC

LIBERAL, Kan. - Seward County Community College opened the 2023 season at French Family Field this past weekend and went 1-3 in the four-game series against Northeastern Junior College. The Lady Saints fell on the first day 20-3 and 18-4 and bounced back on day two with a 10-2 win but fell 13-9 in the final game. Seward County will travel to Oklahoma this next weekend and take on Crowder College on Saturday and Northeastern Oklahoma AM College on Sunday. 

GAME 1 

The Plainswomen scored three runs in the top of the third inning, but the Lady Saints responded with two runs to get within one run, 3-2. In the second inning, Northeastern scored a run, and once again, Seward County responded with a run to trail 4-3. The Plainswomen scored 16 unanswered runs to take game one 20-3.

The Lady Saints Avery Ragsdale had a double and two RBIs, and Aaliyah Gutierrez added two of her own. 
 
GAME 2
 
Northeastern started the game with 10 runs in the top of the first inning, and Seward county scored three runs in the bottom of the inning but trailed 10-3. In a run rule, the Plainswomen scored nine unanswered runs to close out the first day of the weekend 19-3. The Lady Saints closed out Saturday with a 0-2 record and looked to bounce back on day two at French Family Field. 
 
GAME 3 
 
In the first game on Sunday, Seward County took the lead 3-0 after the first inning and looked to keep the momentum going. Northeastern got their first run of the game in the top of the third inning, but Seward County responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-1 advantage. The Plainswomen added another run in the top of the fifth inning, and The Lady Saints scored three runs to enforce the eight-run rule over NJC. 
 
The Lady Saints claimed their first win of the season 10-2 in the first game of the final doubleheader of the weekend.
 
GAME 4
 
In the final game of the series, the Lady Saints took a 2-1 lead after the first inning and continued their momentum from the game earlier in the day. Northeastern took a 6-2 lead after scoring five runs in the top of the second inning, but Seward County responded with three runs and trailed 6-5 after the inning. The Plainswomen looked to take the lead as they scored two runs in the fourth, and the Lady Saints once again responded with three runs to tie the game at 8-8.
 
It remained tied until the top of the seventh inning as NJC scored five runs and Seward County scored one run but could not match the late surge by the Plainswomen. The Lady Saints fell 13-9 in the final game and ended the weekend with a 1-3 record. 
 
Seward County will travel to Oklahoma with two games on Saturday against Crowder, followed by two games on Sunday against Northeastern Oklahoma.
