Weekend Review: Seward competed at the JUCO showcase and won 7-0 over Southeastern Oklahoma

Seward County Community College competed on Friday and Saturday in a JUCO Showcase in Plano, Texas, and concluded the weekend with a win over Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Seward County had a great performance in the single brackets in the JUCO Showcase and had their doubles finish in the top three in their brackets. The Saints finished their weekend with a sweep 7-0 over the Savage Storm in Durant, Oklahoma.

The JUCO Showcase was an individual-based tournament and featured Barton Community College, Cowley Community College, Collin College, Tyler Junior College, New Mexico Military Institute, and Jacksonville College. This tournament was broken up with eight singles and four doubles brackets that were separated to skill level. Each program's number one singles were featured into a bracket and a separate bracket featured the program's number two singles, etc...

In the top singles, Justine Lespes got to the championship match but fell to the nationally ranked number one player from Tyler Junior College in the third set. Chiara Matteodo was able to win her first four matches to get to the championship match of her singles bracket but came in second. Lorena Torrico and Saskia Vogelzang were also able to get to their championship match in their divisions but fell in the final match. Maria Garcia and Lucia Popluharova were able to end the weekend on a win in their third-place singles match. 

Lespes and Matteodo competed in the number one doubles bracket and fell in the semifinals but came back and won the third-place match. Garcia and Popluharova competed in the second doubles spot and lost their first match but won the rest to claim the consolation title. In the final doubles spot, Torrico and Vogelzang made it to the championship match but fell to get second place in their division. 

Sunday's Match

Seward County traveled to Durant, Oklahoma for a match against Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Seward County came out ready to play and won 7-0 over the Savage Storm.

In doubles, Justine Lespes and Chiara Matteodo continued their success with a 7-5 victory. Lucia Popluharova and Maria Garcia competed for the second doubles spot and defeated their opponent 6-3. In the final doubles match, Saskia Vogelzang Lorena Torrico fell to the Savage Storm 6-1.

On the singles side of the match Lespes took care of business in straight sets 6-3, and 6-0. At the second singles slot, Popluharova won in a third set match after losing the first set 3-6 and came back to win 6-1 and 10-4. Matteodo won handly in the third singles spot 6-1, and 6-0. Garcia also added a win with a 6-1, and 6-0 victory. Right with them Torrico added another two-set victory 6-2, and 6-2. Vogelzang in the sixth singles slot won in the third set after winning the first set 6-1 and lost the second set 6-4 but bounced back to win 10-3 in the third.

Seward county improves to 7-7 on the season and will be back in action Saturday, April, 17th at Blue Bonnet Park against Barton Community College.
