Seward Wins Top Two Titles, Struggles at the Bottom

Seward Wins Top Two Titles, Struggles at the Bottom

It was the same script for the Seward County Lady Saints on day two of the New Mexico Military Invitational in Roswell, New Mexico on Saturday, championships at the top of their lineup and major struggles at the bottom. In Flight A singles Paula Lopez earned the tournament championship over teammate Paula Coyos and the two combined to win the Flight A doubles title as well, but other than that, it was 1-7 with their only win coming in an intersquad matchup.

In Flight A singles, it was a Seward vs. Seward matchup in the final once again as Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos played yet another tournament final against each other.  In a modified best two out of three tiebreaker, it was Lopez coming out on top of a 10-4, 10-8 final giving her her fourth straight tournament title this fall.  Lopez is now 13-0 in singles this fall, extending upon her all-time record for wins in a career at Seward.

The Lady Saints went 0-2 in the consolation bracket of Flight B while Naomie Bukassa defeated teammate Stephanie Sanchez 6-1, 6-0 in the Flight C consolation bracket.

It was a busy afternoon of doubles action on Saturday, but once again, the only Seward players to have any luck were Lopez and Coyos.  The duo went 3-0, storming to the Flight A championship, winning 8-1 and 8-2 before taking an 8-4 decision over Champion/Bull in the finals to bring home the title.

The Lady Saints go 5-7 as a team on day two of the tournament, dropping their overall individual match record to 36-38 on the fall.

Lopez and Coyos will wrap up their fall season this week at the ITA National Tournament in Sumter, South Carolina beginning on Thursday, while the rest of the Lady Saints call it an end with the completion of the NMMI Invitational.
