16 Seward Student-Athletes Honored in Record NJCAA Academic Award Class

If classroom performance is any judge of it, there are going to be a record number of former NJCAA student-athletes making their mark on the working world in two years as the NJCAA announced on Wednesday that a record 2,026 athletes, including 16 Seward County Saints and Lady Saints from six different teams have earned NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards, formerly known as the NJCAA’s Academic All-American award.

For the second straight year, Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos will pack a little bit heavier bag for their trips back home to Argentina as Tuesday, the dynamic duo was named ITA All-American’s for the second straight year, the first time any Seward players have ever accomplished the feat. Lopez was named an All-American in both singles and doubles for the second straight season while Coyos picked up her second consecutive ITA All-American award in doubles.

For the first time in school history, the Seward County Lady Saints Tennis Team has finished inside the top 10 at the NJCAA National Tournament. Seward finished 9th in the 27 team event on Thursday, wrapping up a historical week that included a trip to the National Championship match at #1 doubles and a pair of trips to the National Semifinals at #1 and #2 singles.

Seward County sophomores Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos all but wrapped up the #1 seed in #1 doubles for the NJCAA National Tournament next month on Saturday as the nation’s 2nd ranked pair going into the weekend, not only defeated a national contender from Seminole State, but also upset the #1 ranked duo from Tyler to improve to 11-0 on the year. Outside of the Argentinians, the Lady Saints struggled though, losing 7-2 to Tyler and 6-3 to Seminole to fall to 4-7 as a team on the season.
