Seward Finishes Regular Season With Split at Colby

Needing to pick up some momentum before the upcoming Region VI Playoffs, the Seward County Lady Saints managed to only spin their wheels Wednesday afternoon in Colby as they split with the homestanding Lady Trojans, losing game one 6-2 before winning the night cap 4-2 to finish the regular season 34-22 overall and 15-9 in Jayhawk West play, good for 2nd place.

Playing a Colby team sitting near the bottom of the Jayhawk West standings, the Lady Saints got off to a rough start, falling behind 2-0 in the 1st inning despite allowing just 1 Colby hit.

With two outs in the top half of the 2nd, the Lady Saints evened things up, getting an RBI double from Joe Ann Rapoza and an RBI single from Tiffanie Bolanos to make it 2-2.

It remained a 2-2 game into the bottom of the 3rd when a solo home run for Colby put the Trojans back in front 3-2.  Later in the inning the Trojans added to their lead, getting a two out single to score a run and used a Seward error to pick up another and make it a 5-2 game.

Seward put runners on in the 4th and 5th innings, but couldn't push anything across and they remained down 5-2 into the 6th

The Lady Saints went down in order in the 6th and Colby added an insurance run with a pair of walks and a pair of singles to stretch their lead to 6-2.

Seward got a one out single in their final at bats in the 7th, but couldn't manage to put anything on the board and went down quietly in game one 6-2.

The Lady Saints outhit Colby 9-7 in the game, but Seward committed 5 errors in the contest, leading to 4 unearned Trojan runs.  Rapoza was 2 for 3 with an RBI in the loss for the Lady Saints and had Seward's only extra base hit of the contest.  Alexa O'Brien suffered the loss in the circle for Seward, dropping to 16-12 on the season.  She allowed 7 hits and 6 runs, just 2 earned, while going the distance and striking out 3.

It was another rough start for the Lady Saints in game two as they went down 1-2-3 including a pair of strikeouts to start the game and Colby plated a run on a Seward error to grab a 1-0 lead.

Seward got singles and stolen bases to put runners in scoring position in both the 2nd and 3rd innings, but they couldn't do anything with the ducks on the pond and remained behind 1-0 into the 4th.

The Lady Saints finally broke out in the 4th, getting three straight hits to load the bases and a bean ball to push home the tying run to even things up at 1.  They didn't stop there, getting an RBI single from Kennedy Brunson to take a 2-1 lead and then a two RBI single from Danielle Orr to add onto their lead to make it 4-1.

Colby got a run back in the 5th on a two out double, but the Lady Trojans stranded a pair as the 5th came to a close and Seward remained in front 4-2.

The Lady Saints didn't score again, but they didn't need to as Jaclyn Wagner controlled the Trojan bats in the 6th and 7th, getting three fly outs in the 7th to wrap up a 4-2 win for Seward.

Seward had 8 hits in the win, getting a 3 for 3 effort from Rapoza and a 2 for 3 afternoon from Brunson.  Wagner held the Trojans to just 4 hits in her 18th win of the 2015 season.  She went the distance, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, while striking out a pair for the Lady Saints.
