LIBERAL, Kan. - Seward County Community College defeated the Tigers from Cowley College 69-60 on Saturday afternoon in the Greenhouse. The Saints also inducted former head men's basketball coach and program leader in wins and winning percentage, Dave Brown, into the Seward County Athletic Hall of Fame. Seward County improved to 13-13 on the year and eighth place in the KJCCC with a 9-11 conference record.
Wilson Dubinsky led the Saints with 18 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Whitley and Jaylin Henderson had 12 points apiece, as Blessin Kimble provided a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Early in the contest, both teams exchanged baskets as the Saints and the Tigers were tied at 8-8 with 16 minutes left to go in the half. Blessin Kimble helped the Saints regain the lead with a put-back layup as Seward County led 18-17 with 10:30 on the clock.
A three by Dubinsky gave the Saints a double-digit lead, 34-23, with five minutes left in the first half. The Tigers battled back, and with two minutes left, the Saints had a 36-30 advantage. Jaylin Henderson closed out the first half with a three-pointer that beat the buzzer as Seward County went into halftime with a 41-34.
The Saints extended their lead to double digits in the second half with a Jaden Martin mid-range jumper, 47-36. Cowley responded with an 11-1 run to cut Seward County's lead down to just one point, 48-47. The Saints and Tigers were tied at 50-50 until a free throw by Henderson made it 51-50 with 9:30 left in the contest.
Both teams went scoreless for three minutes as the score remained until a Dubinsky four-point play got the Saints back on track as they led 55-50. With two minutes left, the Saints took a ten-point lead, 65-55, and looked to close out the game from the free throw line. The Saints went on to win the game 69-60 and snapped a two-game losing streak.
Seward County will travel to Goodland, Kansas, to take on Northwest Kansas Technical College at 8:30 p.m. CT.
