Saints Hang on Against Cowley, 2-0 in Jayhawk Action

For the second time in four days, the #23 Seward County Saints made the long trip East for a Jayhawk Conference test and for the second time, they returned back to Liberal bruised, but victorious, pulling out a 78-71 win Saturday night on the road at Cowley to improve to 12-1 overall on the year.

A hot starting team this season, the Saints fired out of the gates again Saturday night against the Cowley Tigers, wasting no time in taking control of the game 20-9 before the first half media timeout.  In front of their home faithful, the Tigers finally found their footing to cut into the Saints lead, but at the break, it was still Seward by seven, 35-28.

Seward shot 48% in the half while holding Cowley to just eight first half field goals and 24% shooting.

Cowley cut the Seward lead to four early in the second half, but a huge three from Delano Jones in the corner pushed the Saints advantage back tout to seven with 13 minutes remaining.  After a Cowley bucket, it was Charles Beauregard's turn to heat up from deep as he swished home a triple to give the Saints a nine point lead, 57-48 at the midway point of the second half. The Beauregard three seemed to have been the turning point for Seward as Cowley never closed back to closer than five and another Jones three late in the game was the dagger for the Tigers before the Saints held on to win 78-71.

Seward shot 49% overall in the game while the Saints defense stifled Cowley to just 31% on the night.  Jones finished a career night with career highs in both points with 22 and rebounds with 11.  Beauregard scored 18 for the Saints while Stevenson and Mathieu pitched in 13 and 12 respectively.

The Saints improve to 12-1 with the victory and start their 2015-2016 Jayhawk Conference schedule 2-0.  Cowley drops to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in league play with the defeat.

Next up for Seward is a battle against defending Jayhawk West Champion Butler at home in the Greenhouse on Wednesday.  The Saints and Grizzlies will tip off at approximately 8:00.
