Double Trouble For Saints in Colby

Double Trouble For Saints in Colby

In what has become a season of firsts, and some not necessarily in a good way, the Seward County Saints chalked up another tough one to that list Friday afternoon in Colby as they were swept in a Jayhawk West doubleheader with the Trojans for the first time in school history.  In the opener it was a classic pitchers dual in which Colby scratched out a 1-0 win as the Saints hit into five double plays in the seven inning game.  In game two early defensive miscues by Seward and a lack of offense throughout for the Saints was the difference in a 6-2 decision won by the Trojans.

In game one Seward actually outhit Colby 7-4 in the game, but weren't able to squeeze across a run.  Reed Thompson was 2 for 3 at the top of the Saints lineup and Thompson was the only Seward player with more than 1 hit in the loss.  Austin King suffered the tough luck loss, going all 6 innings on the hill for the Saints, allowing just 4 hits and 1 run while striking out 4 and again not walking a single opposing batter.

SEWARD COUNTY/COLBY GAME ONE BOX SCORE

In the second game Colby had 9 hits to the Saints 6 in the contest, but it was 3 Seward County errors that proved the difference in this one.  Out of the Trojans 6 runs in the game, just 2 of them were earned.  The Saints six hits in the game came from six different players and Brent Williams and Jordan Leinweber collected Seward's two RBI's in the loss.  As King did in game one, JB Olson certainly pitched well enough to win, but the freshman was tagged with the loss, going all the way on the mound for Seward, allowing 9 hits and 6 runs, just 2 earned, while striking out a pair.

SEWARD COUNTY/COLBY GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Seward falls to 24-19 overall on the season and 12-10 in Jayhawk West action.  Colby improves to 23-19 overall and 14-12 in Jayhawk Conference play.  The sweep is the first doubleheader sweep for the Trojans over Seward in history.  The Saints will need two wins on Saturday against Colby to avoid being the first team since the turn of the century to drop a series to the Trojans.
