Saints Can't Slow Cougars in Road Loss

Once again, an opposing team had their way against the Seward County Saints defense Saturday night in Great Bend as Barton put up 108 points on 57% shooting to send the Saints to their sixth straight loss in a 108-95 final from the Kirkman Center.

For the second straight game, the Saints got off to a good start on the road, taking an early 6-2 lead against the Cougars on their home floor.  Barton scored the next five to take their first lead of the night, but a bucket by Martavious Wilson put Seward back in front 8-7.  The Saints however, were shut out for the next four minutes as Barton went on a 10-0 run to open up a nine point lead at 17-10 with 12:32 left in the first half.  The Cougars continued to push, extending their lead to 26-12 at the first half media timeout.  Four straight threes by the Saints, three from Kevin Sims and another from Charles Beauregard got Seward back to within three with 6:14 left in the half and drew even at 36 all moments later on a drive and score from Beauregard.  The Saints went ahead momentarily, but the Cougars closed the half on a 9-4 run to take a 45-42 lead as the teams went to the locker rooms at the break.

Barton came out on fire to begin the second half, banging three three pointers on their first three possessions of the period to quickly balloon their lead to double digits at 54-42. The Saints continued to score, but they couldn't find a way to even make the Barton attack hesitate on their way to the rim as the Cougars pushed their advantage to the largest of the game at 73-53 with 13:31 to go. Threes from Tre Kidd and Jeromie Simmons brought Seward back to within 14, but the Cougars had their cushion back to 80-61 at the second half media timeout.  Seward drew back to within 14 with just over five minutes left and made it a 10 point game with 1:03 left on another Sims bucket, but that was as close as they would get as the teams traded baskets late to a 108-95 final in favor of Barton.

Barton torched the Saints for 57% shooting on the night and were even better from three point land at 58%.  Seward shot it well from deep as well, going 12 for 22, good for 54% while shooting 44% overall on the night.  Sims led Seward with a game high 32 while Beauregard went for 19 points and a season high 9 rebounds.

Seward drops their sixth straight to fall to 6-15 overall and 3-14 in Jayhawk Conference play where they remain at the bottom of the conference standings with nine games remaining.  Barton stays in 2nd place with the win as they improve to 16-5 overall and 12-5 in league action.

Next up for Seward is a return home to the Greenhouse where they will take on the Pratt Beavers  Wednesday night on Hispanic Heritage Night for the Saints and Lady Saints.  Seward will don their 'Los Santos' jerseys for the occasion as they tip at 8:00 with the Beavers.  Free tickets are available courtesy of our buyout sponsor First National Bank at their Liberal locations as well as at Braums and Loves in Liberal.
