Saints Clinch First Jayhawk Series Win

Saints Clinch First Jayhawk Series Win

The Seward County Saints finished up their best weekend of the season to date on Sunday in Hays, Kansas, splitting with Cloud County to secure their first Jayhawk West Conference series win of the year.  Cloud jumped on Seward early in the first game of the twinbill, leading the T-Birds to a 7-1 win, but the Saints rebounded for a 13-4 win in the series finale to take the series 3-1.

Cloud County didn't waste any time in getting things going in game three of the series as the T-Birds knocked a ball off the wall for two runs just three batters into the game and followed that with a ball over the wall for a two run shot to quickly take a 4-0 lead after one against the Saints.

Jared Biddy responded with a solo home run for Seward to begin the 2nd, but that was all the offense the Saints would get the rest of the way.

The T-Birds added three runs in the 6th to make it a 7-1 game and the Saints went down in order in their final at bats to give Cloud their first win of the series 7-1.

Seward managed just two hits in the contest, the Biddy home run and a 5th inning single from Law GreinerBrian Tims took the loss on the mound, falling to 1-6 on the year, allowing eight hits and seven runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

SEWARD COUNTY/CLOUD COUNTY GAME THREE BOX SCORE

The series finale started off a little bit more favorably for the Saints as Seward struck for three runs in the 2nd on a double by Jacob Nielsen and a Cloud error to take a 3-0 lead.

The T-Birds got an unearned run back in the bottom of the inning to make it a 3-1 game and both pitchers settled in for the next couple innings as it remained a 3-1 game to the 5th

A two out RBI single by Biddy in the 5th stretched the Saints lead to 4-1, but Cloud answered right back, getting two of their own in the bottom half to cut the Seward lead to 4-3.

The Saints cushioned their lead to three in the 7th as Tims and Nielsen singled home runs to make it  a 6-3 game and Seward blew things open in the 8th with three more to extend their lead to 9-3.

A solo home run for Cloud in the 8th made it a 9-4 game, but the Saints put things away in the top of the 9th, adding four insurance runs on RBI knocks from Owen Martin, Biddy, and Errett Edwards and closed things out in the bottom half for a 13-4 win to clinch the series.

The Saints banged out 16 hits in the win, getting three hit games from Biddy, Nielsen, and Martin.  The three also combined for seven RBI's and five runs scored for Seward.  Jonathan Castillo earned his second win of the season, pitching into the 8th while scattering 10 hits, allowing three earned runs, and striking out three.  Dominic Duran earned his second save of the weekend, going the final 1 2/3 scoreless.
