Saints Comeback Cut Short in 4-2 Loss to Galveston

Despite a trip South to warmer weather, the Seward County Saints bats remained cold Friday night as they took on the Galveston Whitecaps in Dallas, Texas.  Seward was stymied by Galveston pitching all night, with their only runs of the game coming on a two run home run in the 8th inning from Judah Sweet. The Saints brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the 9th but couldn't extend the contest, striking out to end the game and their night in a 4-2 loss.

Things started out well for the Saints Friday night as they took on Galveston in Dallas.  Sophomore ace Nathan Dockery worked a quick 1-2-3 top half of the 1st inning and Seward had a chance to take the lead in the bottom half as they put two on with two out, but a strikeout ended the threat and the teams went to the 2nd scoreless.

The Saints put another runner in scoring position in the 2nd, but once again, a looking strikeout kept the duck on the pond and to the 3rd the teams went tied 0-0.

The Whitecaps took advantage of their first scoring opportunity, getting a pair of two out hits to score runs in the 3rd to take the first lead of the game at 2-0.

Seward had a golden chance to strike right back with a crooked number in the bottom half of the frame, loading the bases with nobody out for the middle of their lineup, but three straight strikeouts put that threat to bed without a single run crossing the plate as they remained down 2-0.

A Whitecap triple and Seward error in the 5th gave Galveston a 3-0 lead and it remained a 3-0 game to stretch time as Braden Terrell came out of the Saints bullpen to keep Galveston in check.

After two quick outs in the Galveston half of the 8th, the Saints fourth error of the game gave the Whitecaps a chance to extend the inning and they did just that, cashing in an unearned insurance run to make it 4-0.

The Saints finally got something going in the bottom half of the 8th as Jared Biddy doubled with one out and scored as Judah Sweat launched Seward's first home run of 2016 to make it a 4-2 game.

Terrell kept it a 4-2 game with a clean top of the 9th and the Saints had a chance to send the game to extra innings in the bottom half of the frame, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs, but their 12th strikeout of the night was the final blow as the Whitecaps hung on to win 4-2.

Each team finished with 9 hits, but it was 4 costly Seward errors that cost them 2 unearned runs that was the difference Friday.  Sweat led Seward at the plate with a 3 for 4 night, homering and driving in the Saints only two runs of the game.  Biddy had 2 hits including a double and scored a run in a losing cause for Seward.

Dockery started and went 4 innings for Seward on the mound, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, while striking out 5, taking the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year.  Terrell was stellar in relief, going the final 5 innings for the Saints, allowing just 4 hits and 1 unearned run while fanning 4 to give Seward a chance late.

Seward County falls to 0-2 on the year with the loss while Galveston improves to 2-1.

The same two teams will go back at it Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 before wrapping up the series Sunday morning with a single nine inning game.
