Saints Bats Silent in Loss to Galveston

Saints Bats Silent in Loss to Galveston

For the second straight game to open the 2015 season, the Seward County Saints lineup provided more bark than bite as Seward fell to 0-2 with a 3-1 loss to Galveston in their opening game of a four game set in Dallas.

It was a good old fashioned pitcher's duel early on between Seward's JB Olson who is headed to Oklahoma next year and Galveston's Gabe Klobosits who is on his way to Auburn next season.  Both aces were on their game through the first three innings, Klobosits facing the minimum through three and Olson facing just one over the minimum in a scoreless tie.

The Whitecaps struck first in the 4th inning, using a leadoff single and a two out double to plate the game's first run and take a 1-0 lead on Seward.  The Saints struck right back, mounting a two out rally with three straight singles, the run scoring blow coming off the bat of Alec Issac to score Brent Williams and tie the game at 1.

Both teams went down in order in the 5th and the game quickly whizzed along to the 6th inning, still knotted at 1.

Once again, the key to Galveston's success was getting their leadoff man aboard and as they did in the 4th inning after doing so, the Whitecaps pushed across the go ahead run after a leadoff single in the 6th to take a 2-1 advantage.

With Olson's night done after six solid innings of work, Galveston added to their lead in the top of the 7th, getting a double to start the inning and a two out single to score the runner from third to add an insurance run, making it 3-1 Whitecaps at stretch time.

The Seward bats were quiet in the 7th and 8th innings, not even managing a baserunner and it remained a 3-1 game to the 9th

Seward reliever Jakob Hernandez worked around a Saints defensive mistake to start the top half of the 9th inning and kept Galveston from getting anything more and the Saints got the tying run to the plate twice in their last chance at the plate for the middle of their lineup, but weren't able to threaten as the Whitecaps shut the door on Seward and picked up a 3-1 victory in the series opener.

The Saints were outhit 10-4 in the loss and failed to record an extra base hit in the contest.  Galveston pitching struck out 12 Seward batters and the Saints left 4 runners on base in the loss.  Brent Williams was the only Seward player with more than one hit in the contest, finishing the game 2 for 4 with the Saints only run scored.  Olson worked 6 innings and took the loss, allowing 8 hits and 2 runs, while fanning 4.  Hernandez made his collegiate debut, pitching 3 innings and allowing 2 hits and 1 run.

Seward drops to 0-2 on the year while Galveston earns their first victory of the season.  The Saints and Whitecaps continue their four game series with two games Saturday in Dallas followed by a Sunday matinee to wrap up the trip.
