With all of the success that the Seward County baseball program has had since the turn of the century, you know it is special when something good happens that hasn’t happened in over a decade, and that is exactly what happened on Tuesday, as freshman catcher Brent Williams was named a 1st Team NJCAA All-American. Williams becomes the Saints first 1st Team All-American since Ryan Nelson earned the honors during the 2003 season.

Six Seward County Saints were honored by the conference this weekend as members of the All-Jayhawk West team. Catcher Brent Williams took home top honors as he was named a 1st Team selection as well as the Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year. Fellow freshmen Kevin Connolly and JB Olson were named 1st Team members as well. A trio of Seward sophomores earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors including lefty Austin King, outfielder Bryson Allen, and utility man Reed Thompson.

The Seward County Saints got off to a good start Friday night in their Region VI Tournament 1st Round game with the rival Hutchinson Blue Dragons and finished the game with guns a blazing, but it was the middle innings that did them in as a four run 9th inning wasn’t enough to erase a five run Hutchinson lead as the Dragons hung on to win 8-7 to push Seward to the elimination bracket.

In a do or die situation Sunday afternoon at Hudson Field in Chanute, the Seward County Saints gave the proverbial monkey on their back a nice boot as they eliminated the two time defending Region VI Champion Neosho County Panthers with a 14-2 run rule pummeling to advance to the Region VI Championships next weekend in Wichita.

It was a day of comebacks on Saturday as the Seward County Saints and Neosho County Panthers squared off in the first round of the 2014 Region VI Tournament. In the best of three series in Chanute, it was Seward who was down to their last strike in game one, coming from behind to win 9-8 in 10 innings before the Panthers erased a 4-2 Saints lead in the 8th inning of game two to scathe off elimination with a 5-4 walk off win to split the doubleheader. The split sets up a winner take all, Sunday contest with the winner moving on to the Region VI Championships and the loser packing it up and heading home for the year.

The Seward County Saints finished off a forgettable Jayhawk West Conference schedule on Sunday, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Butler to finish the conference season at 16-16, their most conference losses in school history. Needing two wins Sunday to clinch a home playoff series, Seward failed terribly as they were unable to hold a late lead to lose game one 6-5 before being drubbed in game two of the doubleheader 17-7 to wrap up their conference season.
