Ravens Fly Past Saints

Ravens Fly Past Saints

The Seward County Saints fell behind early and never recovered Wednesday night on the road at Coffeyville, dropping an 89-64 decision that was never close to fall into last place by themselves in the Jayhawk Conference standings for the first time this season.

The Saints took their only lead of the game 1:11 into things at 3-2, but allowed Coffeyville to score the next 15 points in a row as Seward went scoreless for 6:45 and the Red Ravens opened up a 16-3 lead.  The Saints got back to within a touchdown on a three from Kevin Sims with 8:07 left in the first half, but again, a nearly 5:00 Seward drought without a single point would see Coffeyville's cushion pad to 13 with under four minutes to go in the half. The Ravens got the final four points before the first half horn, taking a comfortable 39-21 lead into the locker rooms at the break.

Seward scored the first four out of the break to make things interesting, but Coffeyville quickly answered and needed little time to make it a 20 points game once again at 47-27 with 18:10 to go.  Seward never threatened again as the Red Ravens continued to pack onto their already sizeable lead, eventually taking a 27 point lead before going on to win 89-64.

The second half was never competitive as the Ravens piled up 50 points on the Saints defense in 20 minutes.  Coffeyville shot 50% on the night while Seward managed just 39% shooting and coughed it up 20 times.  Sims was the only Seward player in double figures on the night as he finished with 18 while all five Coffeyville starters scored 10 or more.

The Saints forgettable 2017 continues as they fall to 7-17 overall and 4-16 in Jayhawk Conference play, where at night's end, they sit in last place of the 14 teams in the league. Coffeyville improves to 15-9 overall and 11-9 in conference play to remain in the mix in the middle of the standings.

Seward will look to right the ship on Saturday night at home when they return to the Greenhouse to take on the Allen Red Devils in an 8:00 tip.  Free tickets are available courtesy of our buyout sponsor Community Bank at the Liberal location as well as at North Hutch's.
