16 Seward Student-Athletes Honored by NJCAA For Academics

Academic awards from the 2015-2016 school year continued to pour in for Seward County student-athletes on Thursday as 16 Saints and Lady Saints were honored with NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards as announced by the governing body.
63 Saints/Lady Saints Earn Way Onto AD Honor Roll

The 2015-2016 school year proved to be more than just a successful one on the court and in the fields for the Seward County student-athletes as Wednesday it was announced that 63 of 99 student-athletes made their way onto the Spring 2016 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Lady Saints Wrap Best Season In School History with 7th Place Finish at Nationals

The Seward County Lady Saints National Tournament run came to an end on Wednesday in Tyler, Texas, but it didn’t do so before some history was made. With 26 points, the Lady Saints are locked into a 7th place tie with the rival Cowley Tigers, marking the programs best finish at the NJCAA National Tournament in school history.

The Seward County Lady Saints climbed one spot to #5 in the NJCAA National Tournament standings on Tuesday, getting a singles win from Tadi Mrewa and a doubles win from Mrewa and partner Madison Hoelting to secure points and push those two onto the semifinals Wednesday.

The Seward County Lady Saints sent two players in three draws to the court Sunday afternoon in Tyler, Texas as the 2016 NJCAA National Tournament got underway. Seward’s sisterly combo of Mialiniaina and Maminiaina Rakotondrazafy went 3-0 in their three matches on the day, picking up six points for the Lady Saints to put them 10th after day one of the tournament.

Seward Comes Up Just Short in Region VI Tournament

The Seward County Lady Saints came up just 1.5 points short of their first Region VI Championship Sunday afternoon in a long, hard fought day of tennis at Blue Bonnet Park in Liberal. Needing to win all three championship matches in doubles play after a meltdown in the final singles match of the weekend, Seward was only about to get two of the three and therefore fell just short of the rival Cowley Tigers who finished with 14 points. Despite the disappointing ending, the Lady Saints still did more than enough to punch their tickets to the NJCAA National Tournament in two weeks with their second place finish and will join Cowley and third place Barton, who collected four points on Sunday, in Tyler in May.

The 4th ranked Seward County Lady Saints continued a busy stretch of matches on Wednesday, making the long trip to Arkadelphia, Arkansas to take on Ouachita Baptist. Coming off of their first loss of the 2016 season, Seward rebounded well, knocking off the Tigers 8-1 to improve to 16-1 on the year.
Lady Saints Upset By Cowley For First Loss

Despite a mismatch on paper between the 15-0 and 4th ranked Seward County Lady Saints and the 4-7 and 9th ranked Cowley Lady Tigers, everyone around the two programs knew that Monday’s dual between the two Jayhawk Conference rivals would be a battle. A battle it was, coming down to the final two singles matches, unfortunately for the Lady Saints, they were only able to pull out one of the victories as the Tigers hung on for a 5-4 upset win to hand Seward their first loss of the 2016 season.

Despite holding out half of their normal starting lineup, the #4 Seward County Lady Saints still cruised to a win Friday afternoon at Blue Bonnet Park in Liberal, downing visiting Kansas Wesleyan 8-1 to setup a showdown with the rival Cowley Tigers in just two days in Liberal.
