Saints Remain at .500 in West Play With Split

The Seward County Saints let a prime opportunity to make up some ground in the Jayhawk West standings slip through their hands this weekend in Pratt as for the second straight day on Sunday, the Saints managed just a split against a Pratt team that entered the weekend with a 2-6 conference record.  The Saints looked primed for a series victory after blowing out the Beavers 12-3 in game three of the series, but in game four their head scratching 2015 season continued as Pratt scored six times in the first three innings to go on to win 7-4 to split the series.

The Saints got the day started off right, hammering out five runs in the 1st inning of game one of the doubleheader on Sunday.  Seward loaded the bases with one out and a single from Justin Graff-Rowe plated two to put the Saints on top early 2-0.  They didn't stop there as Dillon Drury ripped a double off the wall to score two more runs and Drury scored on an RBI groundout from Nic Ricigliano to make it 5-0 Saints after ½ inning of play.

Pratt got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run and used back to back doubles in the 2nd to score two more times to make it 5-3.

Saints starter Brent Bezio settled in from there, holding the Beavers in check for the next three innings while Seward added a run in the 5th to extend their lead to 6-3.

In the top half of the 6th, the Saints offense got things going again.  Jared Ledbetter whacked his first career home run on a 1-1 pitch, a two run shot, to give the Saints an 8-3 lead and later in the inning Seward got a two run double from Brent Williams to make it a 10-3 game.  The double, Williams 47th of his Seward career, broke the school's all-time record for career doubles, previously set by Josh Paul with 46 during the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Seward added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the 7th to make it 12-3 and Bezio shut down the Beavers in the 7th to wrap up the win for the Saints.

The Saints pounded out 12 hits in the win, getting a 3 for 4 game from Drury who also finished with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI's for Seward.  Ledbetter and Chad Kennedy each had 2 hits for the Saints and Williams drove home 3 in the victory.  Bezio went the distance, picking up his third win of the season.  The sophomore allowed 7 hits and 3 runs while striking out 4 to improve to 3-1 on the season.

SEWARD COUNTY/PRATT GAME THREE BOX SCORE

Things didn't get off to such a good start for the Saints in the 1st inning of the series finale as they looked to secure a series win over the Beavers.  Pratt used a Saints error and a balk to score a pair of two out runs to jump ahead early on Seward 2-0.

Pratt added to their lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd, but the Saints battled back, getting an RBI double from Williams and an RBI groundout from Brandon Rix to cut the Beaver lead to 3-2.

As soon as the Saints got close, the Beavers tacked on a few more, using a bean ball and a Seward error to set the table for a three run home run to put Pratt on top 6-2.

Two more Saints walks gift wrapped a seventh Pratt run in the bottom of the 4th inning to make it 7-2 Beavers.

With one out in the 6th inning, Drury unloaded on his second home run of the season over the centerfield wall, a two run shot to close the Saints gap to 7-4.

Unfortunately for the Saints, that would be all the offense that they would muster on this day as Seward was unable to even pick up a hit in their final three at bats and the Beavers went on to win game four of the series 7-4 to split the four game set.

Seward outhit Pratt 7-6 in the game, but Saints pitching walked 6, hit another 2, and the guys in green committed 4 errors on the defensive end, leading to 5 unearned runs for the Beavers.  Williams finished 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for the Saints while Drury was 1 for 4 with a homer and 2 RBI's.  Nathan Dockery was tagged with the loss on the hill for Seward, allowing 4 hits and 6 runs, just 1 earned in 2 2/3 innings of work to drop to 0-1 on the year.  Jakob Hernandez pitched well for the Saints out of the bullpen, allowing just 1 hit in 4 1/3 shutout innings of work to finish off the game.

SEWARD COUNTY/PRATT GAME FOUR BOX SCORE

At the halfway point of the season, the Saints sit at a disappointing 12-17 overall and 8-8 in Jayhawk West play where they are in a 5th place tie with Barton at weekends end.  Pratt moves to 11-16 on the year and 4-8 in Jayhawk West action with the split.

The Saints will now go out of conference action for their next five contests, playing Clarendon Wednesday at home at 3:00 followed by a non-conference weekend set against Rose State Saturday and Sunday at Brent Gould Field and then a single game at Frank Phillips on April 1st before taking on Colby in league action on April 3rd and 4th in Liberal.
