Saints fall short in Wichita, finish season at 33-26

WICHITA, Kan – The Seward County baseball season has come to an end after a loss to Fort Scott in the Region VI/Plains District Baseball Championship. The Saints finish with a 33-26 record on the year, which is almost a 20 win improvement from last years 14-42 campaign.

Game one of the weekend saw Saints' ace Brian Luna Alvarez face off against Luc Fladda, the ace for the #2 nationally ranked Johnson County baseball program. After the first inning it was looking like we had a pitching duel on our hands as both pitchers put up a zero. In the top of the 2nd inning the Saints started the scoring with a Connor Cox solo homerun and heading to the bottom half Seward County was up 1-0. The Cavaliers would then go on to take control of the game and plated 5 runs in the 2nd inning after a 2-RBI single and a 3-run homerun. The Saints would struggle to score the rest of the game and would go on to lose 7-3. Luna finished with a final line of 4 innings pitched with 8 hits allowed and 7 earned runs with 3 strikeouts. A bright spot in the game for the Saints was relief pitcher Trent Gerber who threw 4 shutout innings allowing only two hits and striking out a pair.

In game two of the weekend the Saints faced off against the Fort Scott Greyhounds in a win-or-go-home matchup. The Saints started out good putting two runs on the scoreboard before Aidan Moore stepped on the mound, but from then on the story of the day was runners left-on-base (LOB). The Saints squandered opportunities in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings where they had two or more runners on base but failed to put any runs across. On the day the Saints left 14 runners on base and were unable to score any runs after the first inning. The Saints would eventually lose 10-2 in the seventh inning to the Greyhounds.
