No. 9 Seward claims fifth straight win with a victory over Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Seward County Community College came back in the first two sets to defeat Hutchinson Community College 3-0 on Wednesday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The Lady Saints are on a five-match win streak and are now 16-4 overall and 9-2 in conference play. Seward County will be back in action on Saturday night against Cloud County Community College at 6:30 PM.

To start the match the Lady Saints trailed 13-8 after a kill by the Blue Dragons. Seward County responded with a 9-2 run to gain the lead for the first time in the set and led 17-15 over Hutchinson. The Lady Saints looked to close out the first set with a 23-10 lead but after a Blue Dragon time out, they responded with three straight points to tie it at 23 all. Seward County capitalized off of a hitting error to take a 26-25 lead and a kill by Berfin Mertcan gave the Lady Saints a 27-25 first set win.

In the second set, Seward County trailed Hutchinson 11-8 after an attack error on the Lady Saints. Seward County trailed for the majority of the second set but finally tied it up at 19 all after a service ace by Gabriela Badilla. Seward County closed out the second set on a 6-1 run to win the set 25-20 and to take a 2-0 match lead.

Seward County took control of the third and final set with an early 9-2 advantage. The Lady Saints continued to roll as they took a 21-9 lead and looked to close out the match. The Blue Dragons made a last minute effort but the lead was too large to over come as Seward County won the third set 25-13 to defeat Hutchinson.

The Lady Saints are back in action on Saturday to take on Cloud County in the Greenhouse at 6:30 PM.
