Yanlis Feliz Named NJCAA D1 and AVCA Player of the Week

Liberl Kan- This week Seward County Community College outside hitter Yanlis Feliz received NJCAA Division One National Player of the Week and received the AVCA two-year College Player of the Week and received KJCCC Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. This is the first time this season that a Lady Saint has been recognized for their performance on the national level. During the three matches last week Feliz had 38 kills during the nine sets averaging 4.2 kills a set to have a combined hitting percentage of .473.

Going a combined 3-0 this past week all against conference opponents Feliz had her best match against Colby Community College who was undefeated in conference play coming into Wednesdays match against Seward County. Feliz had 16 kills, with two errors on 22 attempts, for a hit percentage of .636. This would help the Lady Saints to a dominating performance winning in straight sets.

When asked what it means for her to receive these awards and be recognized on the national level she responded, "Signifies one more achievement for me. Now that I am in another country and being recognized for my work, it's a lot." As Feliz comes from the Dominican Republic she brings her own style to the game but when asked how her game and the team's game has changed since the start of the season, she feels it has changed a lot, "Its changed a lot because I get here with another rhythm of play" Feliz said.

Having won all 24 sets so far in conference play Feliz explains her mind set when entering a match against her opponents, "Take down the other team and always think that my team should win." She said. Her expectations for her team the rest of the season is to win and continue to win as she said, "I want to be the champion and the champion again next year also."

With Yanlis Feliz outstanding performances this year sky is the limit for her and the Lady Saints. Having another home match this Saturday versus Independence starting at 6:30pm, it is another opportunity for Feliz and the Lady Saints to continue their outstanding play in the Jayhawk west Conference.
