Saints Earn First Win of 2014

The 20th ranked Seward County Saints got on the board in the win column Saturday afternoon in Hesston, Kansas as they knocked off the homestanding Larks 5-4 for their first win of 2014.

The Saints got off to a good start in doubles action as the top ranked duo in the country in Ronzai Saurombe and Alejandro Gonzales earned an 8-2 win in #1 doubles against Hesston's Drew Hostetler and Yuu Sakaguchi to give Seward a 1-0 lead.  A short time later the Saints #2 doubles squad of Trevor Kipping and Colin Glassman followed suit with an 8-2 win over Dominic Murray and Kris Mast to put Seward up 2-0.  The Saints had to give up a point due to a default at #3 doubles, but Seward still took a 2-1 lead into singles play.

In #1 singles action the Saurombe had little trouble with Hesston's Eric Cender in a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing. In #2 play Gonzalez breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sakaguchi to put Seward on top 4-1.  Kipping sealed the win for Seward with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hostetler in #3 singles action while Hesston picked up the point at #4 singles and then both #5 and #6 singles as Seward had to default to the Larks, but the Saints were still able to come away with the 5-4 win.

Seward improves to 1-2 on the year and even their Region VI record to 1-1.  The Saints will return to the courts on Thursday in Oklahoma City when they take part in the Seminole State Invitational where they will open the tournament with 5th ranked Collin County at 9:00 AM.
