9th Ranked Seward Upended by Cougars

The slow start to the 9th ranked Seward County Saints season continued on Saturday as following a 5-4 loss to unranked Newman University on Wednesday, the Saints were shocked by another unranked team in the Barton Cougars 6-3 in Great Bend to fall to 0-2 on the year.

The eyeopener of the day came in #1 doubles play where Barton's Vinicius Ono and Alvaro Martinez shocked the 2013 ITA National Championship duo of Seward's Ronzai Saurombe and Alejandro Gonzalez in a match that wasn't even that close at 8-4.  The Saints did get a quality win in #2 doubles as Trevor Kipping and Colin Glassman teamed up to knock off Jeret Johnson and Nicholas Moyers 9-8 (3) to even the match at 1-1.  Seward again was forced to forfeit at #3 doubles and they went to singles action down 2-1.

Ono took it to 10th ranked Saurombe once again in singles play, downing the Saints top player 6-1, 6-2 to hand Seward's freshman a rare loss in #1 singles.  In #2 singles Gonzalez picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Martinez for the Saints to get Seward to within one at 3-2 and Kipping drew Seward even with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Johnson in #3 singles.  In #4 singles Moyers was able to get the best of Glassman 6-4, 6-3 to put Barton up 4-3 and the Cougars picked up two more points on Seward forfeits at #5 and #6 singles to take the match 6-3.

The Saints fall to 0-2 on the year as a team and are now 7-11 in individual matches, but Seward is 7-5 in individual matches played.

Seward will look to get in the win column in two weeks when they return to the court against Hesston on March 29th in Hesston for a 12:00 start.
