2021 Seward Saints Basketball Preview

LIBERAL, Kan. – Seward County Community College men's basketball program starts the season at Allen Community College tonight (January 27th, 2021). The Saints were selected to finish fourth in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference West preseason coaches' poll. They are led by fifth-year head coach Jason Sautter and third-year assistant coach Tyrone Grady.

During the 2019-20 season, the Saints had an overall record of 17-14 and finished fifth in the KJCCC West with a 10-11 conference record. The Saints have five returnees from the previous season but only three are healthy to start the season. To start the season the Saints' second-team all-conference point guard Branton "Bee" McCrary will not be in the lineup due to previous injuries. The team will have just three active returnees to start the season.

The roster is filled with 21 student-athletes that are all eager for an opportunity to play this season. Coach Sautter discussed his expectations of the team, "We want to get back to playing fast, want to get back to playing a lot of people and we want to get back to pressuring the ball full court."

At the beginning of the Spring Semester the Saints brought in 11 new student-athletes and in three short weeks, they are competing in their first conference game. Coach Sautter talked about the new roster, "In the short weeks we have not had the ups and downs and for us, it is how are we going to respond." He went on to talk about the team's maturity, "The maturity of our team individually showed us what I wanted to know as far as making adjustments on the fly."

The Saints will take on a 1-1 overall Allen Community College on Wednesday evening in Iola, Kansas. The Devils are led by their sophomore Freddie Word who is averaging 21 points per game in their first two games of the season. Allen was selected to finish fifth in the KJCCC East coaches' poll.
