Saints Clinch Home Playoff Game with Sophomore Night Win

LIBERAL, Kan. – Teams always want to play their best basketball towards the end of the season, and Seward County is starting to hit their strides, winning a conference game by a season-high, defeating the Dodge City Conquistadors 84-52. With the win and an Independence loss to Hutchinson, Seward moves into 7th place in the Jayhawk Conference and has secured a first round home playoff game.

Two straight Ke'Sean Davis three pointers to open the game were a sign of things to come for the Saints, as they could hardly miss all night.  Hegel Augustin gave the Saints a 10-point lead just six minutes into the game forcing a Conq timeout.

Seward used the Dodge City timeout to their own advantage, going on a 7-0 run over the next the next five minutes to extend their lead to 24-7. The Conqs tried to fight back over the remainder of the half, but the Saints defense was too much, holding Dodge City to just 29 percent shooting in the half, as Seward took a 39-24 lead into the break.

The Saints began pulling away early in the second half, going on a 6-0 run to take their first 20-point lead of the game following a Davis jump shot. With just under twelve minutes to play, a signature corner three from sophomore Terrell Alfred pushed the Saints lead to over 30. Montrevion Flowers gave the Saints their largest lead of the day with a floater in the late to put the Saints up 80-45. Seward milked the clock for the remainder of the game, to win 84-52.

Seward shot 52.4 percent (33 of 63) from the floor in the game to push their record to 8-1 when they shoot over 50 percent from the floor.  The Saints held the Conqs to just 28.3 percent from the floor (17 of 60) and 26.7 percent (8 of 30) from deep.

The Saints have been pounding the paint as of late, and Saturday night was no different, coming away with 40 points in the paint, while allowing just 14.

Three Saints scored in double figures, including both sophomores as Davis ended the night with 22 points and 8 boards, while Alfred finished with 13 points.  Isiah Small rounded out the trio with 13 points of his own.

The Saints will have another chance to move up the standings on Monday night, traveling to Garden City to take on the Broncbusters in the final regular season game.  The game will take place at 8 p.m. and can be heard on 107.5 FM with Brock Kappelmann (pxp) on the call.
