Beauregard's 40 Not Enough in Saints Loss

Beauregard's 40 Not Enough in Saints Loss

Charles Beauregard became one of just four players in Seward County history to score 40 points in a game Saturday afternoon in Dodge City, but his big day wasn't enough as Seward dropped to 1-12 on the road this season with an 80-70 loss in their first trip to the Conquistadors brand new DC3 Student Activities Center.

For the second straight game, Seward got off to a horrendous start, watching as Dodge City jumped out to an 11-2 lead to begin the game and a 21-6 lead six minutes in.  It was a 16 point game at the first half media timeout before a 7-0 Seward run got the Saints back to within single digits at 31-22 with 7:03 left in the half. It remained a nine point game three minutes later, but despite holding the Conqs without a point for over 2:30, Seward couldn't take advantage and cut into the lead even further and it would cost them as Dodge City closed the half on a 9-2 run, pushing their lead to 46-29 after one half of action.

Charles Beauregard led Seward with 13 first half points, but the Saints turned the ball over 10 times and allowed Dodge City to shoot 56% from the field to give the Conqs the 17 point halftime lead.

Dodge City pushed their lead to 19 early in the second half before Beauregard decided to put the Saints on his shoulder and put together one of the better halves of basketball in Seward history.  A Beauregard three got Seward on track and another three moments later made it a 13 point game as the two teams neared the midway point of the second half. Back to back drive and scores from the sophomore made it a 10 point game and another long bomb got Seward back to within single digits again with 7:55 to go.  After Dodge answered with a bucket, Beauregard connected again, wrapping up a stretch of nine straight points to make it a 65-56 game.  A cold stretch for Seward allowed Dodge to cushion their lead back to 14 and then 16 before a Beauregard hoop stopped their momentum, but by then, the clock and the Conqs were working against the Saints thoughts of a comeback.  Beauregard scored four more points in the final minute of the contest to give him 40 on the afternoon and Martavious Wilson picked up a late bucket for Seward, but time ran out on the Saints as Dodge finished off an 80-70 win to send Seward to their 20th Jayhawk Conference loss of the season.

Beauregard became one of just four Saints in school history to reach the 40 point mark and the first since 2003 when Keoni Watson did the trick.  But outside of Beauregard, the Saints had just nine field goals and shot just 29% while 0 of 8 from the three point line.

Seward drops their 11th straight road game, falling to 8-21 overall and 5-20 in Jayhawk Conference play. Dodge City continues a solid campaign, improving to 20-9 overall and 17-8 in league action.

The Saints will play for the final time in the Greenhouse on Monday when they host the rival Garden City Broncbusters in an 8:05 tip before hitting the road for the Region VI Tournament next Thursday.
