Cowley Gets the Best of Seward in Jayhawk Battle

Cowley Gets the Best of Seward in Jayhawk Battle

In their toughest test to date of the 2015 season, the #14 Seward County Lady Saints received a C, dropping a Region VI Showdown with #8 Cowley by a score of 6-3 Saturday morning in Arkansas City.

None of the three doubles matches had much drama as Cowley won at #2 and #3 without dropping a game while the Lady Saints 2nd ranked duo of Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos had no trouble with the nation's 8th ranked pair of Anna Bukutan and Eva Fornetron, winning 8-1 to make it 2-1 Tigers after doubles action.

Cowley quickly wrapped up the match win as singles play began, overwhelming the Lady Saints at each of the spots 3-6 in the lineup to go on top 6-1.  The premier matches on paper were at #1 and #2 singles as four players ranked inside the nation's top 40 went head to head.  In #1 play it was Seward's 3rd ranked Paula Lopez battling Cowley's 8th ranked Anna Bukutan.  Lopez came out strong, taking the first set 6-3 before hanging on in the second to win 7-5 to give Seward their second win of the match.  In #2 singles it was 10th ranked Paula Coyos taking the court for the Lady Saints and #40 Eva Fornetron for the Tigers.  The match didn't live up to its billing however as Coyos blew Fornetron off the court with a 6-2, 6-1 victory to see the match finish 6-3 in favor of Cowley.

The loss drops the Lady Saints to 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in Jayhawk Conference play while Cowley improves to 6-7 and 1-0 in Jayhawk action.

The Lady Saints will have the week off before taking the court once again next weekend when they travel to Oklahoma City to take part in the Seminole State Dual Match Classic.
