The Saints split at Pratt

PRATT, Kan. - Seward County Community College splits their doubleheader at Pratt Community College with a game one win 5-4 followed by a loss 8-4. With the loss in game two, the Saints are now tied with Cloud County Community College for second place in the Jayhawk West with a 16-10 conference record. Seward County will be back in action at Brent Gould Field on Saturday to finish the series with the Beavers.

The Saints started the day with three straight hits in the top of the first to gain an early lead. Kase Johnson singled to center field that scored KP Werner from second base. Wyatt Grant connected on the first pitch he saw for a two-run home run to center field to give Seward County a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Pratt responded in the bottom of the first inning with two runs of their own to cut the Saints lead down to 3-2.

Both teams went scoreless in the second inning as the pitchers settled in. At the top of the third inning Grant connected for his second home run of the game to give the Saints a 4-2 advantage. The Beavers matched with a solo home run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead back down to one, 4-3.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, KP Werner hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Peter Goldy from third base and the Saints led 5-3 after the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, the Beavers added one more off of a solo home run and Seward led 5-4. The two teams went scoreless in the final two innings and the Saints won with a 5-4 final score.

Sam Berberich pitched all seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out five batters to receive the win.

For the final game of the day, the Saints started off hot once again with Braden Boisvert hitting a three-run home run in the top of the first to give Seward an early 3-0 lead. Pratt responded with a run in the bottom of the first to cut the lead down 3-1. Seward County scored one more in the top of the second with a triple by Kase Johnson that scored KP Werner from second. 

The Beavers scored a run off of a sacrifice fly in the second and later tied the game in the fourth inning with back-to-back batters hit by the pitch with the bases loaded. The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Beavers took the lead after scoring four runs and had an 8-4 advantage. Seward County did not respond in the ninth and lost 8-4.

Cory Didier took the loss for Seward County, allowed three hits and four runs over four and a third innings. Dylan Day started the game, went three and two-thirds innings, and allowed four runs on three hits.

The Saints are back in action Saturday at 1 pm in Liberal, Kansas to conclude the series against the Beavers.
